The tune played when you're calling someone is a nightmare to my ears.
Still, everyone I've spoken to about that agrees. It's just a collection of awful-quality hums.

Other than that, I mostly use Skype for normal messages and chatrooms rather than calls.

I have Skype purely because talking to someone you met online with webcams rather than text is a good way of knowing if they're legit or not. For regular communication I just use good old e-mail.

I have Skype. It is great for video calls with family and useful for business calls, video or just audio. But I sometimes find it quite intrusive when I am on the receiving end, if I am not expecting the call, unless it is my family. So I only turn it on when I am going to make a call or when I am expecting a call!

I tried it more than once, and found it to be the most annoying medium of communication I'd ever experienced, and it probably sent my blood pressure into orbit. Regular telephone with no video is the only thing I can cope with, and I personally would refrain from telephone use too, if I could be a part of society without being plagued with it.

I have it, and find it much more useful for school/work purposes than for regular chatting (gtalk/msn are nicer, IMO). Saved me a lot of money on sporadic long calls, that I can't afford with my phone because I don't use it enough to justfify a flat rate (I hate the phone!). It is also much easier to organize skype teleconferences than to meet physically for group projects.
