Do friends have bigger lives outside of you?
I tend to relate to people one at a time, rather than as big groups, so I'm friends with individuals rather than their whole social circle. I don't see that as a bad thing. My friends are often quite different too, so they are not always friends with each other either.
Besides, I notice that friends rarely share all the same friends, so it's quite common for everyone, not just Aspies, to have friends who have groups of friends they don't know.
When I was invited to submit a short story for a collection in book form, we held a small event at a rented hall. I invited about everyone I knew. And when all those people showed up, people who mostly didn't know each other, people whom I had met in different contexts and for different reasons, I was amazed at how many more people I knew than I had really given myself credit for. I think the feeling you describe must have befallen each of my friends at that event. Sometimes you don't notice that you also have a big life outside of a specific friend.
