yes that is all so true.. but it doesnt stop me wishing they werent like that and hoping to meet someone who isnt like that...so i try and try (and always end up hurt in the process) (Im 39yrs)

Don't be too discouraged. Good people who really GET IT are hard to find but this is part of the reason that I let some of my "weirdness" show. Possibly too much because I'm not always aware how strange I seem to other people, but I want to be able to attract others who can relate to the weirdness while repelling those who don't appreciate/understand it at the same time.

I have some luck, not tons, but I think it's worth trying. Just finding one person who really gets it can mean so much.

I do the exact same thing. In fact, I expect from both my friends and my girlfriend to be able to be myself at all times when in their company exclusively. Of course I will avoid behavior I know to annoy them, but I refuse to play a role among people I'm supposed to be close with. If I can't be myself around someone, I cannot consider him/her a friend. Not coincidentally, being able to be completely myself around a woman without any stress whatsoever is something I find very attractive.

I'd want to be a bit more social - just so that events where you're forced to be around people wouldn't be so uncomfortable - I have really bad social anxiety so just being around people is hell for me. Most of the time I'd rather be alone though.

I am quite social already. I have found a group of like-minded people, both NT and on the spectrum, who for once I can interact with and not feel any pressure to be anything else but myself.

The bad thing is, they're all much older than me. My youngest friend is 23 years old.

I've always wished for a friend my age, with whom I could share my interests the same way I share them with these older people. There's something different about people my age, though, that makes it impossible for me to connect with them on a personal level.

It made me very sad in the past, because I was forced to interact with people I had nothing in common with against my will through group work and just plain social isolation, until I've discovered the world of adults. And before that happened, I couldn't do it. I couldn't make a single friend.

At times yes. Some times I just want to be alone, but other times I strive to be social without the worrying about are they leaving me out, do they like me, etc etc

I tend to agree with that, and I wouldn't want to socialize with people like that, but even when I like someone and think they would be worth knowing, I'm not able to deal with them or know how to connect to them, and that frustrates me and makes me sad. So yes, I would like to be more social.

On the other hand, I am confused by people who are friends with people they know are mean, manipulative, catty etc, and don't seem to really care that they are friends with a-holes. That's one issue I've had trouble with in the past: what I should accept about people and what I should consider a deal breaker. I can't navigate that one well at all.
