I agree with you that experts with "hands-on" experience do provide more than the simple diagnostic criteria. However, I think it's rather inappropriate for those experts to diagnose individuals based on personal experience instead of using the diagnostic criteria. Those experts should be updating the DSM (as they are now) as a collaborative effort to reflect new information learned since that last publication.

I understand what you're defining here - but it seems meaningless in the context of my original question. If anything, you could declare that those who no longer fit the diagnostic criteria have "discovered their talents" by "going subclinical".
