I love grocery shopping - unless I have to go with my mom. She shops too damn slow!! ! I have my pace and don't prefer to wait for her. I also HATE going during the day because it's crowded with people and when I push a cart they're all in my way. Especially in the soda/snack aisle, there's always always always people stocking shelves and I cannot comfortably get through.

However the grocery store always has the PERFECT temperature and I LOVE looking at all the different foods - even though I can't afford the good stuff  The same goes for any store I shop at like Target or a cd store - I prefer it to be pretty much dead.

It's definitely better at night.

For me, the worst part of shopping is having to deal with other people (customers) in the store. I particularly hate it if they brush past me, shove me, or push their cart down my feet- (it´s amazing how often that happens! What, am I invisible?) I think crowds of people are possibly my worst sensory issue.

Otherwise, it wouldn´t be so bad. When shopping alone, I tend to draw into myself and get into "zombie mode". I think this irritates some people.

did you make that cartoon? i love that! i totally feel that way.

Yes, there's a thread with the whole thing here.

The supermarket cartoon is taken straight from my weekly visits to the Acme, including their playing of "Takin' Care of Business" every day at 10:00 and 3:00. I know this because one time, the lady in front of me asked the cashier about it, and he sang along as the song was playing, "Tennn-o-clock-and-threeee-o-clock!" LOL. Who on earth likes that song? It burns my ears.

I also wanted to gripe about this fish lady they have who's super-friendly, to the point I won't buy from her anymore. I walk up to the counter and she's all, "Hello sir!! ! How are you today? Are you having a good day today??? Do you know what you want? Do you know how you're going to cook that?" Last time, I was going to pick up some fish, but she was there, so I actually skipped it and made a separate trip to another fish shop. And you know of course, 99% of the customers must think she's won-der-fullll!

The lights, noise, and people can be confusing. My way around this, is to have a set routine I follow which allows me to overcome these distractions. My diet is very pedantic, mundane and simple, so it is easy to obtain the items I need. I tend to stay only as long as is necessary. I only shop when I simply must, (like if I run out of groceries).

Either my mom goes to the grocery store for me, or she goes with me. Soon I will have staff to take me and Mom will be off the hook. But yes, the grocery store is one of the worst places for sensory overload.

They confuse the daylights out of me. I have to deal with bright lights and crowds. After I pay for my stuff, the cashier moves on to the next customer, with out helping me put my groceries in my cart, and just when I know where everything is, the store gets changed around, again. I hate supermarkets.

I find shopping overwhelming and exhausting! I don't mind shopping online sometimes if I can find what I am looking for right away. But forget it if I have to walk inside into all of that! :(

All my sisters think I am the strangest woman because I do not like to shop, I never have. :(

The one exception, the one place that doesn't do that to me is B&N Book Store. I love that place. I 'm transformed when I walk in, and it's as if I'm the only one in the whole store. It's Heaven!

Supermarkets scare me, don't know about confuse me :) Well, that's not a good thing. It's not the supermarket itself, it's all the people. The self service tills scare me more - it doesn't give me enough time to do everything. When I'm trying to shove my change and the receipt into my purse, the machine is already saying, ''please take your items,'' about 5 times, and that makes me rush more. Then the people in the queue are watching and waiting for me, and are probably thinking, ''oh hurry up, stupid cow!'' or something rude like that, and when I know there are people waiting for me and watching me, it makes me panic more (due to my social phobia - I can't do things when people are watching me).
But I don't like queuing in long queues either, for the normal tills (the ones with the cashiers). Last time I was waiting in a slow queue there was a brat behind me in it's pushchair, screaming and kicking my legs, and I inwardly got angry, but I knew I mustn't retaliate to it's parent because I will probably get into trouble - knowing my luck and the way parents are stupidly overprotective with their brats these days.

People and their kids frighten me to death in supermarkets. Otherwise, I like supermarkets.

Yeah, big stores overwhelm me the minute I step in and I invariably falter wondering why I came in in the first place. So I have to have a list for more than two things. At the grocery store my husband takes over and pushes the cart, leading us through, reminding me, etc. because if he doesn't and it's just me, I'll come out with maybe a starfruit and something inedible that has pretty packaging.

I take a while shopping at Walmart as I like to look (atl east very briefly) at each and every product on each and every shelf and fridge / freezer. There has never been a time when I left that place without fighting with my gf over taking too long.
