I'd want to come back as an NT. I think NTs are more adapted for this world. Aspies have s**t for social skills, and even shittier coping mechanisms. Why do you think we have amongst the highest rates of suicide?

I don't view it as a difference. It's a disease, scourge, or a bane to society.

It is simply how autism affects us personally. That is why I state it as an opinion. For me, autism is wonderful. I play the good cards and ignore the bad cards. Some may view it as a disease if they want to, but for me it is a difference. I am happy in life. And I have Asperger's.

I'd want to come back as an NT because I've never been one and I'm curious. I'd want to come back as a man, too. An NT male... KNIGHT! Totally awesome. In my next life, I want to stage a coup. And then create a democracy!! ! Well, if reincarnation were real.

We do NOT have all of the same challenges NTs do. NTs face a large number of things that make it very hard for them to do or say what they know is right. Most (not all) NTs will never understand how wonderful it is to have a special interest, while most (not all) Aspies will. Many NTs are forever deprived of a huge amount of the beauty in the world because they're stuck focusing on interpersonal relationships. NTs have a huge NEED for socializing that we simply don't. They are more capable in that area than we are, but they're NOT capable of NOT doing it.

They're not better than we are. They have challenges we don't; we have challenges they don't. I have no reason to believe NTs are any worse than Aspies, but I have every reason to believe they are not better.

Einstein, Newton, Mozart achieved genius through autism

Speaking at a meeting of the Royal College of Psychiatrists' Academic Psychiatry conference, Prof. Michael Fitzgerald, Professor of Psychiatry at Trinity College, Dublin, said that the relationship between creativity and psychiatric disorder is not a myth, arguing that the characteristics linked to autism spectrum disorders (ASDs) were the same as those associated with creative genius.

Sort of like how quadriplegics don't have to worry about knee injuries from running.

False.

Many of us (if not most) also NEED to socialize but we can't. This leads to other severe mental problems such as depression that NTs would also experience if they were deprived of socializing.

It is this unmet need that likely drives the increase rates of suicide and is the source of most of the misery in my life.

If she actually said that, then in my mind that discredits everything else she has to say.

I have spent the last decade of my life in scientific research institutions. I have met many dozens of brilliant NT scientists who have contributed hugely significant innovations to scientific thought.

From what I have seen anyone making the above quoted statement is either ignorant or so caught up in pro-autism zealotry that they would be immune to any logic or reason on the matter.

I need socialization. I don't get it. I'm bad at getting on with people and people don't like me, so I withdraw. That doesn't mean I don't need to talk to someone other than myself.

Like I've said so often. Asperger's isn't the issue, it's how others treat us. Hardly anyone accommodates for us.

I'm really thinking without aspies, there'd be no Microsoft. The Prius and Toyota's half-baked throttle control system and their take on Bosch/Mercedes' ESP wouldn't exist. And so on...

Speaking of democracy (and freedom), Thomas Jefferson (american declaration of Independance) and Abraham Lincoln (ended slavery in america) are also thought to have been Aspies or at least on the autism spectrum. There is many more of course.

It seems to be the fad today that every non-racial minority group wants to claim past historical figures as one of their own in order to make themselves look more important.

I've heard it argued that Lincoln was actually a closet homosexual or that a medieval King of England was a Muslim.

Most of these claims are complete garbage and only serve to muddle the truth.

I think the statement is intentionally exagerated to illustrate that society would be less advanced without autism.

Speaking of scientists, how many of them have been to a psychiatrist (or therapist etc)? or have tried some of the tests here, if not they should, they might be very surprised. One of my friends is a scientist (genetics), he accepted to do one of the tests (so far I haven't been able to convince him to do more or if he did he didn't tell me), and was surprised to see his score was very high (toward autism), he didn't even want to give me his result lol I had to insist. Also note that you can be a scientist and be very NT, being a scientist doesn't mean you necessarily are creative, you could just continue experimenting on something someone else discovered (which is also a good thing of course).

I will repeat myself here but I think that everyone is more or less on the spectrum(s), AS spectrum, and NT spectrum, some having more AS traits and others having more NT traits.

You are entitled to your opinion of course.

Ultimately it does not matter who has autism and not that is famous. If you want these examples to feel good about yourself go for it. The fact is because of autism people also have real needs and I'm not talking about A.S because that is very mild. In my advocacy career I have to create real solutions to real problems and it's not always about simply being different.

I think that is why here government does not pay for people with A.S to receive Regional Center services. I did not spend 8 years isolated after school, with little goal to socialize and unable to get to the grocery store unless I called emergency social services because my autism was a gift. Meanwhile I found online self-advocacy more about pride then helping me and others with more severe needs. With services I have become more more independent, mentally healthy and professionals have inspired me to be a leader but for the rest of my life I will need services.

The reason for naming famous people is simply that they are known, if for example, I tell you about the great things my aspie friend Jonathan did, since you don't know him, it might be a little more difficult to imagine how much the things he did helped others.

I agree with you on this. However, because of the subject of this thread, I focused more on the good sides of autism. Personally I think it would be great if there was more help generally, but I think if autism was to be completely eradicated the world would miss out very much.

I have a great frustration with pride advocates and am biased. There is the good and the bad. I think the online autism community needs leadership and direction to help people more. Maybe you can be a leader.

As for aborting austics, I think this is great, I wish that had happened with me. I don't reckon einstein/tesla were aspies either.

I could have been aborted. But my mum fought for me and has continued to fight for me ever since.

I don't think everything is dull or boring either. I just think what people think is boring is interesting and what they think is fun I want nothing to with.
Get yourself some special interests and things will get better for you. Just forget about trying to be normal. It works for some but it's a lot of hard work.

Just think you could have had something so much worse. You could have had it more severe.
