Silver (aluminum) foil - usually from chocolate bars but the larger kitchen stuff is much more fun.

I used to like sculpting small but perfectly formed bowls from it, by working it in the palm of my hand and smoothing it out into a nice, satisfying curved shape. Sometimes I'd build in a small handle, to make a kind-of miniature ladle, which if pleasingly shaped would then be added to the small collection I kept on my bedroom window-sill.

Either that (or as well as that, come to think of it) rolling it between my fingers so it was almost as thin as wire - and then plaiting several of these into a fatter wire - and then of course it had a much more interesting pattern to it.
That was "successful" if the plait was nice & symmetrical and evenly balanced. If not, I'd do it again until it was. Er, and again.

I do still stretch out and plait the polyethylene/cellophane/whatever wrappers from sandwiches though, just as a small ritual after I've eaten them.
It's just not right carelessly throwing it away all scrunched up.

I imagine which furniture I would put where, what colors I would paint the walls, what I'd change about the house and garden etc. to make the perfect home or the perfect work place or a fun shop. When I come inside other people's homes my mind goes off redesigning the place and I keep doing it in my mind long after I'm out of there.

I do this too!

I have a slight fascination with Medieval torture methods, as well as archaic forms of execution.

One less morbid fascination I have is with the lights reflecting off my fingernails.

I know most of the license plates on the cars at work. Many also from my neighborhood. I am a "night vacuumer" too....... The oddest thing is a "routine" that involves eating. I stick to a very rigid food routine but it actually keeps me in excellent shape and health......
I don't like when furniture in the house touches baseboard heater elements and I hate dirty floors

I can't believe it! This topic has been active for days and I forgot to mention my most random and most humorous obsession of all - Little Lad from the Starburst Berries & Cream commercials! I never thought I could adore an advertisement character so much, but I do. He reminds me a little of Willy Wonka from the 2005 Charlie and the Chocolate Factory movie, who is one of my major obsessions. Must be the brunette pageboy cut and the connection to candy. I just wish there was more commercials and information about Little Lad out there. The only thing I know about him is that he's played by an actor called Jack Ferver who also played a minor role on the Comedy Central show Strangers With Candy.

Here are the two commercials that Little Lad stars in:

The company that owns Little Lad probably has a full-blown dossier on him, including his life story, relatives, his likes and dislikes... They get really detailed about their mascots, and are very strict about how they're used.

Yup, I do that too.

Mick Avory and The Kinks. No wonder I'm stuck in an earlier time. It's better than pretending to be what I'm not, which is like the people of my generation or later generations.

fellow candy wrapper smoothener here! i did that as a kid, forgot about it til now ... as a kid i also collected glass animals, the tinier the cuter, with bits of colour in them, i adored them, and those very very small glass marbles too. i also used to break "earth" marbles and get the tiny metal one that was inside, also i kept all the tiny glass balls that closed my pens' ink cartridges...had thousands....
most random obsession ever.

But what's the point of creating all those details about him if they're never going to share it with anybody? :?:

I collected them too! And kept them in my pen so it rattled and annoyed everyone else. Someone tried to copy and spilt mine over the floor :( I was gutted and never spoke to her again lol.

I used to collect bouncy balls and lined them up and gave them all names. :?

The closest I can think of right now was trying to talk as much like the characters in Buffy as possible. Making with the Buffy speakage. I still have bits and pieces of that, and it'll come back pretty strongly if I rewatch the series as I keep planning.

Oh my gosh I used to do that too!! !! Buffy was probably the biggest most intense obsession I've ever had. I memorized the original air dates of every episode and made an intricate timeline of everyone's histories. I bought the script and soundtrack from the musical episode. I could go on and on. I quit when I had an oportunity to be real friends with some really nice people because I felt I had a better chance if I was more "normal". That was 5 years ago almost to the day, and I'm still glad I made that choice, I'm still friends with that group of people. But it was hard, probably nearly as difficult as quitting any addiction. I actively avoided any Buffy connections for years. Last week I was housesitting for a family and they had cable, and I don't, so I was surfing through the channels and saw Buffy. I started watching and I felt hypnotized. All that information came rushing back. It was crazy. I was sooooooo happy. I got to see the 2nd half of season 4, all of season 5, and the first half of season 6. I miss it, but I think I would miss my friends more.

Other weird obsession: errors in subtitles in tv or movies. I don't use subtitles when I watch tv, but if someone else has them on (or I can't figure out how to turn them off) I can't pay attention to the show because I'm reading the subtitles and cataloging every error. I don't know what I would do with that information, but I can't help myself.

I got very obsessive about folding origami - mid- to upper-level insects and tiny modular boxes, mostly - over the past months.

I spent a year making whitewing paper airplanes...long before there were kits.
