 Nice one.

The thing is, it is even more difficult to diagnose females with AS, because they are rarer and present differently. Rain Man hardly qualifies as an example of female Asperger's syndrome, even if he did qualify as an example of male low-functioning autism (and that is debatable!). Unless the diagnostician is an expert, a specialist, in ASD AND specifically in ASD in females, their opinion may not be worth much

Someone posted a video in the women's forum yesterday in which a girl who presents some pretty typical signs of AS had trouble getting a diagnosis because of how girls' behavior is judged differently from boys. There's more to it than "presents differently."

What's his name. We should start an internet campaign to out him as an idiot. If it went viral we could put him out of professional practice. People like this are dangerous.

I find it quite odd that your doctor says that you have to act like rainman to have aspergers.

The rainman character was predominately modeled off of a real life person by the name of Kim Peeks. Kim didn't have autism or aspergers. He was born with macrocephaly, damage to the cerebellum, and agenesis of the corpus callosum, a condition in which the bundle of nerves that connects the two hemispheres of the brain is missing; in his case, secondary connectors such as the anterior commissure were also missing.

So what your doctor is saying is "in order to have aspergers, you must act like a person who doesn't have aspergers".

The rainman character was also based off of another real man called Bill Sacket. His official diagnosis was mental retardation. So once again your doctors insight is "in order to have aspergers your intelligence must be below average even though the DSM states it must be normal or above average."

Where did you find this doctor? Under a rock somewhere?

Hamilton, Ontario? That's close to me.

I think we should picket his office. Call the news. Make a show.

WOW! Thank you guys for your support. It means so much. I've been feeling crazy and going in circles for so long...

*group hug* (yea.... i'm one of those! lol)

I do have another referral to an endocrinologist, cuz i've also had some severe "female issues". The one i'm seeing is one who apparently has researched the links between autism spectrum disorders and certain gynecological disorders. And perhaps she has more expertise in how it manifests in women. Another 4 months till then... we'll see!

Hope it all works out for you. Please bear in mind that merely submitting a letter of complaint without hard evidence to back up your claim will be taken as and treated as a disgruntled client complaint... aka it will be tossed in the trash can after being read.

Get your evidence, present it and have a lawyer ready to back you up (hopefully one you consult prior to submitting the letter+evidence as a lawyer will know much better than anyone here how to deal with this situation).

As a special education teacher, I have read hundreds of psychological reports. I would guesstimate that about 10% of the reports contain serious errors about the student's intelligence. In addition, I believe that diagnosing a person with autism or asperger's is even more difficult than estimating intelligence. I also believe that I have found diagnosis errors with autism and asperger's.

Not so. A 2008 study concluded that Peek probably had FG syndrome.

Nah. Apparently, we'd all be too worried about missing Wapner to manage that.

How in the world do I get evidence of this. This happened in a clinic at St Joseph Hospital. It's aparently a new clinic.
This is not going on paper anywhere on records, you guys know this!! LOL That's the joke. That's the answer he gave me and it's not like he put that down in his case notes (obviously, that's when he stopped taking notes!).
I know i don't have anything to stand to battle anything. All i have is my word. Proof. There's none other than the fact that I was there and that's what I was told. I'm not in any position to battle anything. It will be dismissed and i know that, but that's why i'm saying, i'm just leaving the paper trail.

One day, if someone does get proof of something else idiotic this doctor says or does, than there's gonna be a "history" of it.
I don't care that it's not going to be taken seriously. But if u don't even let it be known, how can it EVER be.

I write my letter, move on n let it go. He's not worth any more of my precious energy! I know if I pursue anything further, I'm wasting my time. This entire hospital is phony from top to bottom. It's not the first time I go in there and i'm interacting with a "doctor" who seems to have receive their medical degree from the University of Wikipedia! lol This just seems to be the state of health care here in this city and they truly don't have any respect or understanding of mental health, despite the fact that this city is popular for it's big hospital centres and it's suppose to have state of the art medical technologies and highly trained professionals... bla bla bla. I've been less than impressed while living here and it's really disappointing.

It's just a big fat hustle guys. Nothing more. It's clear to me folks be setting up big building just to swipe of your insurance card. I've worked in health care and mental health service here. It's a joke!! !

I just go elsewhere from now on. That assessment was really my confirmation, after a series of questionable experiences i've had in this hospital. I've never encountered this before. I'm outsourcing my health care elsewhere, outside of the city, where it's just about clocking hours and making u fill out forms. I know, there's a degree of that everywhere, but here, it's just outright in your face and ridiculous.

I agree though that it's disgusting enough i wish i could expose it, but i got enough going on in my life, i need to put the energy where it's needed.

I hope you get better treatment elsewhere. What happened there was so ridiculous it should have been in a movie itself.

Sorry for your inconvenience (re: Hollywood trained psych), Amyris, but very good you are here. I do have an idea about finding an appropriate medical resource (and there are good and dedicated practitioners, certainly). On the Wrong Planet, in the Parent's Discussion (unknown why that's the location as it's applicable for all) is a *sticky* with an ongoing list of recommended clinicians in various geographical locales, including the USA. Below is the link. This is a great resource and may give you a lead. :)
