I can't go without my news on The different Channels. Now I have to go off of UHF/VHF Relay stations which are over the air for CBS, NBS, KTTV"FOX", and KTLA. there is no Cable were I live.

Because so many elements of the Internet resembles television, we are switching back to dial up. This should hopefully keep my boys from watching some of the mindless videos. I think the cost is $3.00 per month for 100 hours of access.

I was on Dial-up a few months ago and it only connected at 36.6-46.6kbps and I could not do anything that i did when I live in a place with DSL I manage game servers and websites. it is a pain on Dial-up and to even load up sites like CNN and FOX News would take over 20 min because all the flash files and the Dial-up's Very HIGH packet loss also I was paying total of $80US including the Dial-up service"$10US" and Phone line"$70US". I couldn't even listen to 36Kbps Radio stream of News stations and also thx to being on Dial-up made my Legal copy of Windows 7 Pro go illegal because it could not validate the CD-Key so now I have to Crack the windows now because my key is now trash.

Wow, that's sad, and hilarious. I would rip my hair out if I was forced to use dial-up again, it's horrible.

And, for the 24 hour news cycle, I wonder if the Glenn Beck Phenomenon is where we are headed, as far as what it takes to compete and get people's attention.

Hah, yeah, that's why I only watch my country's national +one private run channel's news shows, since they just have the one news show a day each and don't have any batcrap crazy news talkshows. I mean we have Sky and CNN and all that, but that's what came with the channel package my mom wanted. Really, if anything absolutely huge is happening that I need to know about chances are I'll just catch up with that on the Internet. If it's even bigger and happening nearby or affecting people I know I'll probably find out about it from someone calling or texting me. Everything else is can either wait until 7pm or isn't important enough to bother caring about.

Used to watch TV when I was younger, but nowadays I mainly find it annoying. I'd prefer to not have a TV at all.

I'd be better off with limited television, but I still watch it.
I once gave up cable television and was miserable. I thought I could do without it, no problem, and be satisfied with the local channels. I live near three tall radio broadcasting towers that interfer with reception, so I had lousy reception with rabbit ears. The towers interfered and I couldn't get a clear picture no matter what I did.
After I got my cable television back, this tremendous sense or relief followed.

I can relate. When I got my first color television it was like nirvana to me. We lost power to a Hurricane and did without it for five days. I missed it as much as airconditioning. I never thought I would hate something I was so addicted to for so long. I do though, miss the pleasure and escape, it used to give me.

I grew up watching TV. I found some of my heroes in the shows of the 60's and 70's. The mindless sit-com comedy shows of the 80's and 90's, like cheers, friends, etc. were a comic relief from the stress of work. After 9-11, I got addicted to the 24 hour cycle of "breaking news". I got to the point where it become overwhelming to my senses a few years back and limited my viewing. After not watching it for about 3 months, I understand how much it was influencing my thinking. My sensory issues also seem a little better.

My wife watches it constantly; I don't think she could live without it.

When I was a teenager (for a few years) I watched 7 hours of t.v a day...sitcoms like Seinfeld and the Simpson’s (especially the Simpson’s) became a special interest...I would plan my day around the Simpson’s. I still watch the Simpson’s online while eating lunch ..it's a routine....and now I have a few t.v shows that I watch occasionally (usually while eating) but spend more time doing school work, reading and posting on this site. I do feel better....I can't explain why...maybe it is the sensory overload thing........

My husband I I haven't owned a TV for 20+ years. We do watch DVD movies and documentaries a few times a month though.

Watching TV makes me happy. I don't see why I should stop doing it or why I'd feel better if I did.

As the quantity of vacuous content increases, my TV viewing decreases and at this rate I probably won't bother updating when my region in the UK has the TV broadcast service updated to digital in 2012.
I watch for a few hours spread over the week and record the odd thing but that's about the extent of it.
Most stuff I'd like to watch is or will be available on DVD anyway, and then I get it without all the mind-numbing crap.

Didn't you post a thread about managing your son's special interest because it involved spending a lot of time online?

I was one of the hyposensitive (ADD) ones for light and sound, until age forty five. I also enjoyed it very much. I would have never considered giving it up during those years. My mother often complained why do you have to have that own every time I visit. Some of the older people I knew had no television in their living room. Just, couches opposing each other, and I wondered to myself how can they live without TV. If it hadn't started bothering me in a painful way, I too, would probably still be watching something on it of benefit to my interests.

I will never know for sure what caused my change from hypo to hypersensitivity, so I can't say the TV will ever do anything to you but bring you pleasure. Life is too short to stop doing something that makes you happy, that harms no one else.

I've never had the patience for TV. I never watch it. It's very boring.

Positive effects? I guess I get more excercise.
