I wish people would stop bumping up these old threads.

I don't think what you said was rude or weird at all. If your house is bigger than his house, then it's a fact, not anything to be offended by. If NTs got offended by things like that then everyone would be spending their whole lives treading on eggshells with each other.

When it comes to houses (the biggest investment in most people lives) you DO tread on eggshells. The Op was being socially inept when he said that. His brother may indeed have been being a unfair jerk about it, but it doesn't matter. If you wanna survive in the world there are certain things that you just don't say. And appearing to dis someone else's house size is one of things you avoid to survive.

I made a similar faux pas about a friends house once, but managed to backpedal out of the social mess somewhat by going into emergency mode. I had recently seen a comedian on Comedy Central do a routine about socially inept folks who say blunt things. So I did that guy's routine right there on the spot to make fun of myself, and got my friend laughing.

My brother has said similar things to me actually. But he usually says that someone will punch me in the face for my remarks. My parents tell me the same thing but my brother feels that they don't really do anything about it even though they tell me that it was inappropriate to say. I find that its easier if I say nothing at all but that's just me. These days I keep my human interaction rate to a minimum and call it a day.

Must be an American thing then, because in the UK people aren't such crybabies over something like that. They'll probably just say "yep, it sure is bigger than my house" and move on with their lives.
