Are You Good At Drawing?

I created my avatar using MS Paint. It is not a self-portrait, but the character Orr from Catch-22.

Graphic art has been my hobby for over 40 years now. But when it comes to freehand art, the average dog is better than I am.

I am the same way with drawing. With technical drawing it is really easy to see everything in my head and kind of manipulate and understand what I'm drawing. When I think about drawing something like a dog I can't really see the parts the same way as with diagrams.

Is that even possible?

Had a great passion for drowing in my earlier years. I was seen as "promissing" in my teens when I attended art school. I was good with the 3D part (I can understand and render spatial geometric figures since I was eight) and acurately reproducing shapes from nature. Gave up on it, just to be consistent with the rest of my life ...

I can stil draw from nture pretty well and imagine a badass character though...

You mean my collectors or the agents? If that, then its the people that I work with. My mom contacted people and some people liked what they saw. I work with a couple of agents. I don't know if agents is the right word to use but they get others interested in my art. Another person is interested in my work and its at restaurant that I go to. I talk to a lot of people and go to a lot of shows, that is how they start getting interested in my art. One of the people that bought my art was Kelly Lebrock. She was in the movie, "Weird Science." She bought a picture of penguins. The other person is in California that is currently looking at one of my big pictures of a Northwest scene ( I don't think he will buy it because of the price though but he loves the picture). That one goes for $1,000 outside of shows (where I can get the entire amount of money) or $1,800 in shows because of their percentage they take away. I have been in galleries. Sadly one of them closed down but I sold a couple of originals there as well. It is actually my story that sells the art. That I have autism and schizoaffective disorder and came mostly out of the autism because of a miracle from God from a dog. The dog helped me greatly. That is when I first started talking and before I got the dog I barely said a word and that was at 7 years old. Back then hardly anyone got out of autism. Now more people almost grow out of the autism but back then I was much more severe. I didn't make eye contact didn't talk i didn't do anything and had all the classic symptoms of autism. Now when someone meets me I almost appear normal (except when I am having a psychotic break of course). I also was in one of the big shows in California (I am from Washington State) that was called "Heroes for Autism" or something like that (it was awhile ago so I don't remember much) and only a few autistic artists around the country were chosen to be in the show. I don't remember how we contacted the person for this. It was a few years ago. I don't go to most of the shows because they are around the country and and anyways, it has other artists in them as well I am not the only one. There is one coming up this month in New York that I am not going to. I highly doubt that people will buy anything because they are high quality prints and going for $60 a piece. A little too high if you ask me. Most of the time my prints go for $30 but they are not limited edition. They are unlimited so the value isn't as high. My mom is the one with the connections so I don't know how she got the agents that are trying to make me big and the galleries or the shows or anything for that matter. I just draw.

I used to be pretty good at drawing, but haven't done any drawing for several years, now.
What I definately CAN do now is photography! I am definately also above average at that, too.

It depends if I'm putting all the time and effort into it. Although even if I'm not, sometimes the pic will still turn out great.

drawing for me falls into distinct phases. i remember being very visual as a child & how, at some point, i realized i was becoming less so. when i read a book, i really didn't experience the words as words but as a dim set of imagery, something like a movie i was making up as it went along. i had a sense of loss after i began only reading words, the sense & sound of the words becoming something i was afterwards conscious of noticing.

in the earlier part of my life, i drew constantly. i liked to use pencil, ballpoint, felt-tip pens. i must have started by drawing monsters. then i entered a long period where i only drew cars.
in both these periods i used elements of things i had seen, but much else i had never seen. at the end of my car period, i could draw much of the underlying structural detail of the cars from memory. style had become as important as the quality of detail.

taking an art class in high school, after i had more or less reached a static point in my drawing, was a revelation. i fell in love with color & abstract art. although before this i had gone through a short phase of painting impressionistic landscapes in watercolor on dampened paper (a technique i discovered for myself), this was a new kind of art for me.

i eventually studied oil painting in great depth--without great commercial success. (the effects i was striving for were too idiosyncratic, for the most part.) on the other hand, i began to avoid a "too-studied" look to my drawing, & to prefer the "wild" look of children's & naive artists'. to achieve this end, i stopped drawing with my right hand, & took up drawing with my left exclusively.

that's where i am today.

Were you one of the WP members with schizophrenia? Interesting to see the connection between schizophrenia and aesthetic creativity manifesting so directly.

Also, are you in Ellensburg or Cheney? Those are the two cow towns I can think of in Washington (I live in washington, too.).

I was (and probably still am) very good at drawing when I was young. I used to draw sailing ships, submarines and so forth at 10-11 years old (never had any classes). I got bored with it and haven't done it since.

I normally draw cartoons and I'm not an amazing artist (but I guess I can draw). I'm studying an art course, so I really ought to be better than this:

Getting into an artschool is a great decission on your part. Go for it and don't think twice!
