I usually say either "severe high-functioning" or "mid-functioning". This is because I was diagnosed with moderate autism, but also was told it was HFA because of my academic abilities (and I don't think psychs use MFA often). Since none of those are official anyway (my diagnosis is simply autism)...I would say the way I use both MFA and SEVERE HFA are likely just about the same. I do go to school and make good grades, but I cannot: make and sustain relationships, communicate properly verbally or nonverbally (except in writing--and I am bad at that if it is in, say, an online, where I am expected to respond very quickly), live independently, take care of my finances, do any of my bills (or similar things), sustain employment, etc. So I would say I am MFA.

My offical DX is Asperger's but interpreted strictly, I fit the criteria for autism and Asperger's should only be DX'd when autism has been excluded. I believe the issue in my therapist's choice is my verbosity, even though pragmatic speech was always dicey for me all through grade school and high school.

I still have speech issues, even though they are highly masked. Sometimes my mind just stops generating words to go with my thoughts and nothing comes out of my mouth.
