I've always been rather clumsy when handling things and my own body.

I've always been very clumsy and I still am even in my early forties. I'm constantly tripping and banging into things and hurting myself on a regular basis. I'm not sure what the connection is with ASDs and motor skills. Perhaps it has something to do with emotional control or lack thereof?

Perhaps control is the issue? Period? Like an overloading circuit that just keeps shorting out? An overloaded nervous system that keeps misfiring?

Fascinating. Isn't it?

If you tend to get food on your t shirt when eating is that down to poor fine or gross motor skills ? Like a lot of people here I was bad at P.E.

I drop stuff all the time. I have broken six phones in the last 5 years. I have also broke a Kindle and a tablet. I am very accident prone.

@Firemonkey It can be a sign of dyspraxia.

My motor skills are weird. I’m an artist and I paint detailed art. Things like skin pours, single hairs etc but I can’t paint on an easel(I have to paint on the floor) as I don’t have the fine motor balance, my hand isnt steady when I paint vertical. I struggle with left and right, and constatly drop things, bump into stuff and spill things, yet I managed to somehow coach and do martial arts to an ok level. I suppose it’s a case of compensating and finding a way to do things that suites the individual.

I used to be clumsy I guess, always wanted to be good at physical activity. Been doing gymnastics for two years I love it. My handwriting is sloppy but as for athletics I am and want to be really good at gymnastics and figure skating and martial arts.

I've always had problems with fine motor skills. I had therapies to work on some when I was younger, and they did help a little. I don't remember a lot of the therapies, but I couldn't hold a pencil as a toddler and I remember my therapist in preschool working on that with me. I had trouble also learning how to tie my shoes and my hand-eye coordination has always been awful. I still have trouble catching things if somebody throws something to me.

I find my motor skills very variable, it depends on how much attention I'm paying, and oddly, is often worse the more attention I pay. I can move pretty fluidly when I've learned to make something a muscle memory (playing musical instruments and typing, for example.) But, if I have to try to think and focus to perform the action, I fumble a lot. I was often called "cack-handed" as a child (my Dad's favourite word for it.)

I seem to have very wonky proprioception too, which doesn't help - it's not unusual that I try to move a part of my body so that it would have to pass through another part of my body, because my brain has lost track of where some parts of me are. Copying other people's movements, I find extremely hard - I was terrible at sports because I just couldn't follow the demonstrations, and my drill instructor in Boys Brigade gave up trying to get me to march smartly in the end.

I recall seing a wonderful piece painted by a man with no hands.

Might your disability be a selling point for you?

FTR I have an arist's eye and can't even do as you do.

I’ve not come out of the autistic closet fully. I’ve told some good friends, family and on other occasions where I deemed it necessary. I’m not sure I would want to that.

I've never had trouble moving my facial muscles to form expressions. Maybe it's because I'm female and I learned how through observation, but my mom once said my expressions changed several in only a few seconds.

I also have really good fine motor skills. It's my gross motor skills that are, well, gross. :eew:

Motor skills? Well, that depends on what you're looking at. Need plenty of horsepower to get the job done? Look no further. I don't have the greatest core strength, but that's not a big problem.

If you're looking for someone to do the job gracefully, sadly, that won't be me. Growing up I had virtually every sign of dyspraxia you can think of, and even to this day, I don't have great writing or coordination. It's adequate for what needs to get done, though, and if anyone thinks I'm clumsy, I'll simply say, "I don't have to look great, I just have to work."

My fine & gross motor skills are not the sharpest as, you would never see me on any Olympic team, yet I'm able to do a substantial deal of typing..

My fine motor skills are pretty stellar. In fact, they're better than most. I've been knitting since I was six, which probably helped them develop. Gross motor skills...eh, not so much. On the one hand, my balance is pretty fair. As a kid, I skateboarded, ice-skated, and rode bikes with no problem whatsoever. But walking is hard. The whole, moving your arms with your gait and aiming for the middle of doorways, not where I shine.

It's linked to cerebellum and to general neuron connectivity.
