Is this something any of you also deal with? Is it a common NT trait? Or am I just a jerk?

You're probably just a jerk. I have some reserve when it comes to making jokes. I just think how we discover what others think is appropriate, which like anything we do well, is done through observation. In the end it is for us to decide whether to accomodate them or not. Gosh knows I did make one joke after the death of a person at my secondary school. The two NTs (geh, don't like that word) stood there gawping whilst the other guy laugh his ass off with me who I later found out had aspergers (egh, don't like that term either). You aren't the only person who make arsey jokes. A lot of NTs (ehg (?)) do as well. Ricky Gervais did it at the Oscars. Most people called his jokes offensive. Sane people called it knocking down egos.

Course it isn't okay to offend, if why the person is offended makes any sense. Do you have a damn clue what he has said or are you jumping to conclusions? Jumping to conclusions. Do you forget that violence based jokes are a staple of modern culture? So it seems you don't have any evidence to start going gung-ho.

It's a bit of a confusing concept that people would joke about murder and rape yet would condemn these kinds of acts when they occur in real life. I never get that. And it's not that I am sensitively offensive to dead baby jokes, I just never got them at all and respond to them with a blank confusion about it. Though recently when I started watching Happy Tree Friends, they feature a baby character that gets killed off pretty terrible in gruesome fashion but that show is very based around death humor and the idea is that the deaths themselves are completely unrealistic and over the top that it's okay to laugh at them, at least for me it was. But yeah, telling a dead baby joke at a dinner conversation is a complete form of WTF? Lesson learned: know your audience before you share your brand of humor with them.

Congrats, you made complete sense. Furthermore there is nothing wrong with having a completely different sense of humour to other people. Then again any joke about a baby getting hurt, real not not, is likely to put me off too.

Eh, intent is everything as far as I'm concerned. I take everything people say that I deem to be (potentially) offensive as if they were joking around, which they usually are and I can generally see the funny side of things. Humour helps me cope, it doesn't always make sense why something makes me laugh but I'll take whatever semblance of enjoyment I can get, as it's a rare thing for me.

I do know better than to share my jokes with other people, most of the time. Sometimes a joke just hits my funny-bone with such force that I can't help but share it, often to my detriment. :?

I think it comes down to
"Know your audience"

If you're with friends who tell [taboo] jokes, feel free to splurt out anything.
If you're hanging out with churchfolk, don't mock Jesus.
If you're within hearing of someone who might be a parent or love kids, don't tell baby jokes.
If you're in a place with authority figures, don't joke about violent acts.

I'm personally not surprised you got suspended for a columbine joke right after it happened.
In fact, I'm surprised you didnt end up in a padded cell with a 3-shrink army around you.
Death is a very sensitive subject for many people and you were in an audience that contained teachers (parental figures AND authority figures all rolled into one) and they had just been instructed by their bosses and the media to be as vigilant as airport bombers (loved that cartoon by the way - I'm about to email it to everyone I know).

In summation:
The point of telling a joke is to get a positive laughter reaction from your audience.
You aren't a good comedian if you reliably fail to elicit this response.

See that is not how it works, I write something then you read it, when you understand what I have written, you make comment on it, you don't understand then you don't need to comment.
You just don't copycat or repeat the last thing I said. That’s what little children do.
I’ll explain,
In reply to the your comment on the OP’s post I said
“He may have not wanted people to be honest, but that is me, I'm honest”.
See that little dot, at the end of that line, it’s called a period or Full stop, it’s a punctuation mark to indicate “the end of a declarative sentence”
“If you talk BS I'll call you on it”.
The next line starts with a Capital letter meaning it’s a new sentence, in this particular case it means a new thought line or process. Both the first line and second line do not indicate that I am talking about you, the first line is clearly referring to the OP (short hand for original poster) he is the He in question, moreover the second line is referring to the Generic (Characteristic of or relating to a class or group of things or people; whom are not specified) you, and not the specific you, you.

Well, enough with the arse kissing and sucking up, you hit the nail on the head. You’re a jerk and moreover if you cannot say something funny without being offensive you’re a feeble minded jerk to boot.

I didn't actually say I habitually told jokes around people I didn't know, who might be offended by them, or that I deliberately told jokes calculated to offend people. What I actually said was that I didn't understand why people considered them offensive, and provided a rudimentary explanation for that confusion.

I don't care if you think I'm a jerk. I'm quite certain that I'm not feeble minded.

I think the point is this:

When someone tells a joke, it is either regarded as
Funny
Stupid
or Offensive

It is offensive if it talks about injury to a specific person, or group of persons (ie children) that the listener cares about (ie teachers care about children). Decide what role your audience members have in society and don't tell animal cruelty jokes at a vetrinarian's convention.

"And the monster truck crushed that [racist slur]'s head against the pavement, it exploded like a mellon!"

Is not an appropriate joke to tell around [race] OR around anyone with a distaste for blood. It might be appropriate for a bunch of drunk guys in a secluded booth at [insert bar here]. If you DO tell that joke around, say, your parents teachers or family... unless they are all dumb$#@$ racists, then you ARE going to be seen as offensive, a jerk, and probably psychotic. Even if you aren't.

Quick tip: Replace [racist] with [Aspie] and see if you still like the joke. If you do, then you are a Jerk and there's no going back.

No, I am sorry but you are still trying to hide behind a barrier of words. You first make silly insults, try and divert around what I say and unleash another barrage of senseless verbiage talking about nothing. You're insecure and immature. Your critical faculties work, but are completely dedicated to talking about rubbish in the hope that I would somehow be impressed by the sheer amount of crap, mistake it for you knowing what you are talking about and back down. Your self-gratifying, patronising comments are nothing more than attempt to shield your mind from the fact that you're wrong.

Your first paragraph was talking about the same person and you can't take the fact that you were wrong to call him weak-minded. No amount of explaining about the 'generic' you will make that fact go away. Also, you, you? How redundant redundant.

What you you need to do do is to shut shut up up.

Now let me add a few emoticons to highlight the fact that I am an infuriating self-righteous ass

I have a sense of humour that is, to many people, highly offensive. No topic is off-limits and if it's not "too soon" it's no longer funny. I understand that people become offended because they have automatic emotional responses to certain images and concepts (esp. death and violence related), but I don't understand why either they don't recognise that this is irrational and see the wit and humour, or why I don't seem to have the same response. To my mind, the real tragedies are in the reality of violent, dangerous and unfortunate situations, realities that do not change depending on whether someone points out any (for example) irony in these situations, which also does not preclude someone from helping to better those situations.
Or am I just a jerk?

You said that you understand that people become offended because they have automatic emotional responses to certain images and concepts, and yet you keep on telling the same joke in the same manner.
When you said that you “don't understand why either they don't recognise that this is irrational and see the wit and humour” what you are really saying is, why can they not see that I am right and they are wrong. If they do not agree with you, it does not mean that it is they that are lacking. It means that you and they do not agree.
Now knowing something is causing offence and repeating that behaviour is where “the acting like a Jerk” comes in.

Before I reply, please print out my prior posts and show them to either your court appointed carer or responsible adult, ask them to explain them to you in such a way so that you can understand. Then get them to help you to compose a relevant/on topic rebuttal.

Gedrene.. Tadpole... You guys need to stop hijacking this thread.
Tadpole was responding to the OP's post, not you specifically Gedrene.

Though when She/He said "you need to grow a pair" it seems (to me) that s/he WAS talking to you... Either way I think it's timing and miscommunication and there's little reason to continue this hatefest in public.

Okay now you can both quote me and slash me. I can take it. But I don't plan to respond or to continue hijacking this thread, so I'd rather you do it in pms. Unless you really need the attention.
