If you want to avoid bringing AS up, just say you have an 'eye thing' but don't be specific about it. I sometimes tell people my eyes are wonky and it doesn't mean I am not listening if they are not looking at them! Generally though I tell people I am autistic... or they work it out first...

I would probably say, 'well do you want me to comprehend what you say or do you want me to focus on looking at you?' don't know if they would like that response.

Will NTs accept something like, "I can't look you in the eye and understand what you're saying at the same time"? Like without getting into further details about why?

you might come up with the explanation that eyes tell you more then the person's actual words and they distract you from the content the speaker wants to bring over to you..

I just look at their body. Not their eyes. Problem solved.

Eye contact is distracting, and makes me feel kind of like my soul is being probed. Zoning out between the eyebrows helps a lot.

i look at the upper side of the person's nasal bone, gives them the idea i look into their eyes just as the eyebrow does.

Yea, people can really take it personally if you're not making eye contact. They think if you're not looking at them, you're not listening. It really is best to at least tell someone you have difficulty with eye contact, or even better that you have AS, if the meeting is for something important like work. Otherwise they might decide you're not paying attention or don't care about what's going on.
