It's weird - there's one person I know who is a typical conformist, and isn't different to the general norm, but she wants to be different. She says, ''I'd love to be different to everyone else.'' And I'm like, ''well stop conforming then. Be different - it's not hard.''

I could tell she's kind of scared to give up her conformism and be different. So why the hell does she want to be different?! She's weird to think that.

Despite the NT's reservation to stand out due to fear of rejection, NT's want attention and being different is one way to get it. It also take a certain amount of courage that most people lack but admire.

Hi, I am weird generally but I'm afraid I don't have asperger because I am very good at reading people, too good actually...
I have a great sense of humor, I'm very sarcastic. I'm weird because I never say appropriate things and I have social anxiety. I wish I had asperger, but I am afraid I don't even have it. sh**

ha ha, you remind me of a friend who I've debated tremendously in my head if he's aspie. I dont think he quite fits all the criteria. He's very very good at reading people and making out peoples intentions. But he's very sarcastic, shows little expression, voice a tad monotone, he doesnt always say appropriate things either, rather blunt, its really funny sometimes, he seems very emotionless at times. He looks aloof at times, but as we aspies can be paying a lot of attention to the situation and still seem disengaged.

Stupid example: Dinner discussion: talking about seeing born into brothels, i abbreviated the names, he's MZ.
MZ: Whats a brothel
AD: Would anybody like to explain to MZ what a brothel is?
(silence)
AD: Prostitution
MZ: Yeeeaaahhhh!! !

And ways enough about my rambling. Yeah it is probably, still possible to be weird and not aspie. We aspies dont make up all the weidness in the world.

To tell you the truth, I don't want to try on purpose to stand out, because I have an intense fear of rejection or being judged. And it would take up all my courage to try to do something to make everyone look. Doing weird stuff subconsciously or without caring is a different thing, but actually meaning to do something is, well, scary! :)
When I'm sitting on the bus I often think, ''I wonder what everyone would do if I suddenly started shouting random things?'' I wouldn't dare to do it. Like an NT, having people - who I would never see again - look at me at that one time and judge me severely is such a big issue what has to be avoided all through my entire life.

But I don't want to be different. This is why I want to be NT. Really bad.

I help run a performance and arts space, so I perpetually come into contact with artsy weirdo non-conformists...or counter-cultural conformists who are not necc. on the autistic spectrum...They have their own subcultural groups in which they seem to be able to comfortably assimilate....and socialize with others who have the same aesthetic preferences..blah blah blah...in the passive observance that I have of them as "bartender", it frequently appears that they interact with one another of their similar kind with ease....They may have other issues and it is open as to whether these issues can be related to the autistic spectrum...I have seen a lot of Narcissists and Bi Polar oddball types...but they don't have the sensory and social issues that are associated with the Autistic Spectrum...There is one guy who is sorta considered to be an "outsider" musician, but he is the way he is largely due to a head injury he sustained while in the military, and was not "born" that way...tho he may exhibit seemingly ASish...or notably "odd" traits..namely his Musical "alter ego" and odd speech and a bit of obsessive repetition....etc....but he was a different person before some sort of accident..supposedly...so what he has is not a "PDD"....We have attracted, at times some autistic folk, being a venue that is very "nonconformist friendly" (to some degree)...but those people, even if they do become regulars tend not to blend in with "all the other weirdos"...even if they find a comfortable niche as a "regular" among us...often times folks like that will actually end up becoming our "friends"...as our venue was sorta founded by very socially awkward people...(myself and my business partner),,,and neither of us are quite NT.....

You can be weird without AS. I know lots of non-Aspies who are weird. Being NT does not mean your life will be all rosey, you know. I bet I can name a few NTs who are weird.

It's just another stereotype. Aspies here seem to think that every single NT on this planet are these perfect, well adjusted superhumans who never make any mistakes and can easily plod through life so smoothly, as though social skills are some sort of magical weapon against anything evil. I wish some Aspies here will admit that all NTs aren't all perfect.

I think you can be on the autistic spectrum and ...

have a sense of humor
use sarcasm
use unconventional speech/ be inappropriate in social situations
see through people's behaviours ( ie "reading people" )

Yep...totally...there might be some functions that may not always be totally fluid...but yeah to a degree we can be very capable of that stuff....sometimes I think I am better at "reading people" in certain ways that might be more accurate than assessments from people who are not as sensitive...I have rotten "theory of mind" but I pick up on subtleties when not mostly blocking people out....
