Death is fun.

The thing is, Earthly society wouldn't last if everyone died all at once, and a lot of people apparently like society so they'd rather not die. If this same lot of people actually don't like society, then the only other explanation I can think of is that a lot of people are utterly insane.

Removing comments on multiple threads tonight because I don't want to discuss philosophy as it is difficult for me to convey my beliefs in a way I want others to see them.

Yeah, Me too. I don't even care what people think of me while I'm alive. I sure don't care what they think of me after I'm dead.

I don't have any real fear of dying. But I don't spend much time dwelling on it either. I suppose if I found out I was going to die tomorrow, it might be a little nervous about it.

This answer may be more spiritual, but I personally believe in the afterlife. My worst fear is not dying but dying young and before I live up to a personal purpose.

Why do you believe?

I used to fear death (even while being suicidal), until I had severe panic disorder and was afraid I was going to die at any moment for something like a month straight, and multiple emergency room trips. After that was done, my panic attacks became less severe because I had gone through it all already, and I am not afraid of death anymore.

I am not concerned about what I leave behind, although I think I will leave a lot of things behind and that work I've done will continue to impact people. I only have an opinion about this in the sense that I believe that I've had a positive impact, but that doesn't really affect how I feel about my own death.

I cannot really explain my feelings about others dying, whether human or animal. I will say I try not to kill even bugs if I do not have to.

I like the cut of your gib as I can relate to a lot of that. I have to admit that the one very severe panic attack I had where I thought I was about to die of a heart attack did scare me but mainly because I was thinking about an ex who was far away and how I'd never see her face again. I also go out of my way to avoid stepping on bugs but where I will pick up a big roach in a tissue and throw it outside during the day at night time, when death seems that little bit closer coz it's quiet and dark, I just leave bugs be. I think "Wow, you have your own little mind and important things to do like eating crumbs and finding a mate. Why should I get in your way? How am I any better than you just coz I'm a human?"

I really don't understand why people are so afraid of death. Of course, there is a basic animal instinct that makes us afraid of it and I have that, too. That makes sense from a biological point of view. If there ever was a species that wasn't afraid of death it probably wouldn't have been around for long! Also, from a religious point of view you might be afraid if you think you're going to hell or something like that.

From a rational point of view, however, it makes no sense. If we take the atheist view that consciousness simply ceases at the point of death - what is there to be afraid of, exactly? "Being dead" will never happen to you, because you won't be around to experience it! You won't be without your arms or legs or eyes - you just won't be. So the thing you're afraid of will never happen - at least as far as you're concerned!

Fear of dying is a bit different, because that could be a painful process. But you could just as easily suffer a lot of pain without dying.

Fear is often not rational.

Edit to add: I agree with most of what you said, I just wanted to point that out.

Exactly! You nailed it a lot more concisely than I did. We're fooled by the nature of consciousness itself into thinking that that is all we are, this self-centred action in the brain called a mind. It sets up some false dichotomies that cause a lot of anxieties. Life/death. Here/hereafter. Existence/"non-existence" (which itself is an oxymoron, non-existence clearly can not even exist ).

I'm shure it was a buick. :P
If i remember correctly, Elijah went up to be with the Lord in a firey chariot. He was taken in bodily form, right up into heaven.
Never tasting a natural death. I suspect it was a spacecraft however
