No it does not. Many conditions that cause retardation such as Downs, Fragile X, and Fetal Alcohol Syndrome have physical phenotypes, but retardation in itself does not.

Well they aren't a race and I think it's downs syndrome you are thinking of, I don't know that mental retardation alone effects ones appearance considering all the normal looking mentally ret*d people I've seen.

You must realize that there are other people with this disease that don't like the symptoms as much as you and develop depression, anxiety, and a whole f**k ton of problems as adults that could have been avoided.

I don't actually think ret*d people are a different race. My point was that if people with AS were a different race there would be distinguishing physical traits which there aren't, so there's no chance of it.

The OP was implying that some people with aspergers on here act like they're part of a "superior race" or something.

I agree with jonny23 - elitism is not productive, but making the most of what you have is. Is AS a disability, an advantage, just a difference or something else? That depends on the severity of it, the exact symptoms and, to some extent, on what the person makes of it. I also agree that people's natural tendency to want to belong to some group (which apparently isn't entirely missing even in Aspies!) probably explains why someone may want to be accepted as an Aspie. Or it could just be a case of wanting an identity - "if I'm not this, then what am I?"

I think this evaluates the "would you take the magic pill" question assuming the point of view of an Aspie. But if you were cured you would not be evaluating the results from an Aspie point of view anymore and your opinion may be very different. It's a bit like if you asked people "do you want to magically go back in time to when you were born and change to the opposite gender?" I bet the vast majority would say "no". But if you just did it to them without asking and then asked if they wanted to do the same again (to be changed back) they would also say no.

My point is that not all people with cognitive impairment have DS and do not all look different physically. When you followed with this, "sounds pretty ret*d", in a later post it kinda sealed (pun intended) the deal. I guess I shouldn't be surprised by this kind of thing on an ASD forum but it just seems really out of place.

um, no it isn't. I've agree with diamorphine completely. I've picked up the "you're not one of us if you're self-diagnosed" attitudes oozing from these forums. Believe me, I DEFINITLY do NOT want to be an aspie. So get over yourself. I have even witnessed a bit of aspie-as-bully in that attitude, right here on these forums. It's quite repugnant

This also brings up a point that has been on my mind for a while. Statistically it may be more likely that someone that is professionally diagnosed is more likely to have an accurate diagnosis than someone who has self diagnosed. But that does not mean that someone cannot accurately self diagnose.

That post is repugnant, though, with terminology like "crazy ass schizo" and "retardedly huge superiority complex." In fact, ironically, I have noticed quite a few inferiority complexes on WP, including myself, more than I have superiority complexes. I haven't noticed anyone using that terminology toward the self diagnosed. Just questioning self diagnosis is not the same as insulting someone who is self diagnosed with derogatory terminology.

Some people are natural questioners. They question their own diagnosis. They question others self diagnoses. Since Autistics are all different from one another, they might even question others actual diagnoses. Perhaps people who question do not realize how it looks to others?
