My best and worst experience ever:

a**hole online: What kind of mental problems do you have?
Me: Asperger's
a**hole online: Oh god you are stupid (logs off)

Great way to scare them away.

Happened to me about three times and it's been years now since it has last happened. Now exactly how the conversation went but it went something like this.

I've been told a few times I don't have Aspergers. I have never claimed to have it - I have just claimed (as have others) to have Autism. My diagnosis is Autistic Traits.

Best reaction: My Mom said "I think your Dad must have had it too, because it describes him in many ways and you are so much like him". This meant a lot to me, because my Dad died when I was eight years old and I was always very close to him and related so much to him. Now I know why we had such a special bond. (Of course, I'm also very close to my Mom and she has many of the aspie traits as well, but to a lesser degree. Therefore, I may be the product of two aspies. I don't rule that out.)

Worst, ignorant, and probably common reactions: "You don't have Asperger's...you're too normal to have Asperger's" and "Everyone has a little bit of Asperger's in them".

I had that, I kind of knew they are right in saying that but it still irked me.

I hate hearing that. I think that is like hearing someone is suffering from severe depression and saying "everyone gets a little sad sometimes".

Bad
Being called dumb, stupid, lame, idiot and getting laughed at, which is the story of my f*****g life.

Good
Being told how talented I am when it comes to art.
Being praised for the way I operate heavy equipment.

I made a claim for sickness benefit on Tuesday and had to state what my disabilities are. I said Autism and was asked what that was? :? I then said optic atrophy. Strangely, I wasn't asked what that was. (there are around 30,000 times more people in the UK with Autism than there are with OA.)
