This seems to be a case where I'm different from a lot of us here. I love fireworks, and the louder the better; the closer the better. Same with thunderstorms :P . It's not the kind of noise that puts me into a mental breakdown, like screeching children does, and other things. Explosive kabooms are exciting to me...

Same way for me.

Rrrrg. People have been shooting them off for *weeks* here. I don't so much care about the fireworks themselves, although I find it quite annoying, but it wakes and upsets my parrots, which upsets me, because then they start screaming (for the record, they were my mom's, I inherited them, and I find it psychotically entertaining to get them to interact with me and the few people I allow into my home, because nothing had ever been done with them before. I'm learning to deal with the noise, albeit poorly...)

I have no defense :( Even ear plugs don't block out most of the high-pitch screeching, and it bothers me immensely to see them so upset by the noise.

Horrible for the wild birds too!

Fireworks overloaded me into a shutdown tonight. It wasn't really so bad until the really loud bangs started going off.

My family and I stayed home and kept the dogs inside. Too much noise for me. Additionally, I find shooting off fireworks, especially by "adults," to be quite childish. I suspect that some of those people don't feed their children properly, yet they somehow come up with over $100 sometimes to buy fireworks. Our kids watched the City's show from their bedroom window.

Skipped them. Neither of us appreciates them. Kids were a train wreck yesterday anyway. Once they are older we will start taking them. With it being 95F out at 9pm last night and the kids already being over tired and cranky, we didn't even consider it. I don't like the noise anyway, it was bad enough inside the house...

I tend to go walking around the neighborhood to see the fireworks up close and to see people setting them off. I like it when the really loud ones explode and make car alarms go off and when some of them make funny screeching sounds. I used to play with sparklers and go to fireworks shows with my family, like ones at the beach where crowds watch from the big parking lots. And after the fireworks ended, there would be a traffic jam of cars waiting to get out of the parking lot, which would last for at least an hour, which I thought was amusing.

Tomorrow being the 4th of July here in the US, means there are going to be TONS of fireworks! my neighbors started shooting off fire works at night about a week ago.
Now, I have problems with every-day sounds, much less LOUD fireworks.

What do you do about fireworks?

I plan on wearing ear-plugs and over the ear headphones
(oh BTW I have to go to a big fireworks display with my family... no-way out of it...)

Any suggestions? Coping mechanisms?

Totally dodged the bullet with this one this year! Last year I was dragged in to the pile of a thousand people on the wet grass right below where the fireworks went off. Bleh. Nearly got arrested getting out of there because I hit some jerk with my bike by mistake and he went off on me. Good thing hubby was there to quietly intimidate the guy. This year, the fireworks were cancelled when I was supposed to go (last night) and rescheduled to tonight. Hubby is working tonight so I can stay home with my A/C blasting and all the windows closed. I might feel a few pops and vibrations here and there but should be okay overall.

Crossed the border into Kentucky to pick up some class-C fireworks (ones that go into the air) since they are illegal here in West Virginia.

Came back home and lit up a few, even some screamers. It was definitely one of the best 4th's I've ever had.

I feel like one of the few autistics who has absolutely no problem with fireworks, and to be honest, I foresaw this thread getting made and people talking about their hypersensitivity.
