Do babies give you weird looks?

Same here. For some reason, I'm a toddler magnet, even though they annoy the hell out of me. My mom thinks its because I'm so calm (in the baby's eyes, anyway) and I talk to them like I would a normal person. People have given me strange looks when I talked to the baby normally and tell me, "Why are you talking to Mikey like that? He's a baby, not a teenager! You're supposed talk to him like a baby!" I really don't understand why people talk to babies the way they do. My thinking is if you talk to them like a baby, the baby will think you talk like that all the time and they'll get confused if you talk to people in one way and to them in another.

It's actually considered developmentally better to speak to babies in a more normal fashion. It helps them learn more complex grammar rules and vocabulary. When I worked at a special needs school, it was a rule in the kindergarten classroom that employees were to avoid baby talk.
