I also hate having my picture taken, and my brother-in-law is a photo nut who tries to force it on me... I don't smile for photos at all.

There should be a "sometimes" option.
I sometimes can smile if someone knows how to make me smile and I'm sometimes unable to smile and have to force it out which makes it look unnatural.

I can smile for photos, but I've gone back and looked at photos of me from when I was younger (some, not all) and notice that my smile looks kind of "fake" and rigid - like Donna Williams' smile does in one photo of herself in the inserts in Nobody Nowhere. For some reason, it doesn't have that appearance in photos where I was just caught doing something and was asked on the spur of the moment to smile for a photo. For instance, there's a photo where I'm sitting on my dad's lap when I was maybe 5 and I have a pretty natural smile there. I've gotten better at natural smiles as I've gotten older, I think.

I practiced a lot when I was younger after I noticed a lot of pictures of me with a blank face when I thought I was smiling. It tends to feel really awkward and and forced but is so practiced that I can ensure some sort of a smile for photos (though sometimes it seems to be barely there especially if I'm experiencing a lot of anxiety). I try to focus on specific muscles in my face (especially near the eyes) to make it look like more of a happy smile. I remember having read an article about the links between the way people smile in photos when they were younger (whether they smiled with their eyes or not) and their general happiness when they were older and I think thats when I started trying to do this.

My boyfriend (on the spectrum) doesn't like having his picture taken, but he can smile for it. He doesn't all of the time, it seems, but he can. I think he has a gorgeous smile, too!

Like lying, I can if I must, but I would very much rather not.

Actually, it's a lot like lying.

If I smile, I just look like a cannibal scoping out the park, eagerly awaiting his next victim.

It looks really weird, but I try to (and always fail).

Able to - yes. But I was brought up not to, I think it f***s up your chance to do so spontaneously in the long run.

I can't smile on cue. I didn't have too much of a problem with it when I was little but my older highg school photos I had a really hard time smiling. It's usually a twitchy smile that I have to force. It seems to have gotten worse as I get older. The only time I can seem to smile naturally is when I'm drunk.
