also this test is works once for each person as the more you do it the higher the score.. I got over 9000 once but that cant be right.. I must of just remembered what I read and skiped the bits I already knew.. I only got 60% comprehension with that result but even still..

Wow, I read slowly in comparison. Doesn't help that I seem to get distracted a couple of times each minute.

Wow. You could break the world record with that, it's around 4000.

I'm not really record setting levels. Apparently the people who have it aren't either though.

I guess is that I'm about one of the fastest 2000 people in the world but not one of the fastest 200 when it comes to reading speeds. Savant abilities easily beat me. I know someone who beats me even without savant abilities, but it is a top speed. If I cared to I could without training win speed reading competitions even at non-local levels. I don't see the point of it though. I don't actually care about speed reading - this is just how I process data.

---

I did some tests - when I'm pushing myself to my max speed I'm processing multiple sentences together in the way Callista was mentioning but not full paragraphs at a time unless they are short paragraphs. I was too exhausted last night to test, so I tested first thing upon waking up this morning.

I tried this, although I am medicated with cyclobenzaprine and feeling it (muscle relaxer, helps me sleep):

478 WPM / 82% comprehension.

I am not sure what my upper limits are. I can take in multiple sentences at a time with reasonable levels of comprehension, although I can't process an entire page at once, nor a long paragraph.

When I read, I translate the words into images, often images that the words describe (if possible). This slows down if translation is harder for some reason. For example, a lot of abstract concepts without any obvious concrete grounding.

I can read extremely fast, the problem with me is comprehending what I read. I have to really concentrate on what I'm reading and read at a slower pace to take in the information and process it.

Reading speed is extremely variable amongst ASC people, as is receptive comprehension.
This is another feature of ASC processing differences and sensory issues - you might have extremely high levels on the word count and may also take in the information at a high level if you mono-process and can focus totally on the text and don't have comorbid conditions like dyslexia but on the other hand you might be a slow, deep reader and also be coping with irlens syndrome or some other problem that reduces your word count but as long as your comprehension is good that shouldn't matter too much.

One problem with reading that many ASC people have that isn't dependent on word speed or actual comprehension so wouldn't show with this type of test is the inability to filter the information effectively - this can mean that actually accessing the information you want from a book through using contents, indexing and scanning is often more difficult for people on the spectrum and can make it hard to read for education, etc, without some sort of strategy or support.

581wpm and 91% comprehension. However, the I do not believe comprehension is accurate beach use most of the answers where self evident and multiple guess. I got the last one wrong only because I was rushing. For the record I have difficulty crossing the midline and couldn't read a single word until I was well into the first grade.

I'm a natural speed reader, I've not trained this any more than just being a kid who grew up with books. When I was in my evaluation for my Asperger's diagnosis there was a reading test in it and he kept not taking me seriously when I asked what we'd do if I read faster than the test could measure, and kept telling me to not try to read fast. I kept trying to tell him that I was actually trying to seriously ask him this question. After the test he actually realized why I was asking, when he asked again and I said I'd not read for speed and then when on the comprehension questions I had a particularly high score.

I don't think its important for people to learn to speed read - though there are benefits to reading faster. Comprehension is more important. If people want to train themselves to read faster - I don't suggest to try to read at really abnormally fast rates - its not worth it.

If you read 5000 words per minute, you are able to read 20 pages (in a standard fiction book containing 10 words per line and 25 lines per page) per minute. So you read every page in 3 seconds. Your standard reading speed would be approx. 8-10 such pages per minute. That means you read every page with 95 % comprehension approx. in 6-7,5 seconds.

Stupid story in my case.
My father, whom reading a single page in a book takes several minutes, always used to criticize my reading speed, saying I skip a word after seeing just the first letters and that it doesn't count as reading. I was around 14 at the time and my father was my ideal, so I tried to be like him and read slower, "more fully". I learned to force myself to read every word to the end and stop every single sentence so that I can read "properly", like him.
Only years later I have realized that my father is a brain-damaged moron and what I was doing previously was exactly what fast reading is about. Ever since I've been trying to improve myself, but the old new "habits" of stopping and contemplating every sentence remain, and thus....

Somewhere near the 2nd or Third Grade I learned to Speed Read entirely on my own. Its taken decades, but now I can choose my speed for my enjoyment.. If I really like a story I pick up the pace a bit, but if its something technical I slow it down.

Sincerely,
Matthew

861 with 81% comprehension.

My reading speed varies a lot, I do read a lot, but I also get distracted and often have to go back and re-read. Although it doesn't interfere very much with my reading I do see a lot of flicker on a page.

Jason.

Nrau - not wrong, just different - I got a similar score 348 - 100% and I know I did what it told me to do. I read slowly because I am mildly dyslexic so processing print is tough but I remember everything I read, virtually word for word

I am a very slow reader, that is if I want to understand what I am reading.
I do have the ability to read fast, but I will not understand it.

Writing takes lots of effort and so does listening. Language has always been difficult for me, with the exception of talking about an interest.
