Thank you and thanks for the PM. I'm going to try again to convince my GP that I need a diagnosis - it's not a want; but it's a need. Maybe if I did have a diagnosis and the areas I need help were identified, I could get back to work.

Uni have told me they won't help me obtain the diagnosis - that's the main issue here.

I just checked you out...........Posted: Sat Apr 07, 2012 6:27 pm Post subject: Other disabilities and getting a diagnosis
I am in the middle of getting a diagnosis of an ASD and a few other conditions.

When I spoke to the GP, he explained to me that because I have other disabilities, I am meant to be harder to diagnose. The psychiatrist I saw in February said the same thing. I know that at least one of the issues I have (hypersensitivity to light) does overlap. I have been told there's at least 3 (excluding ASD) reasons why I may have it and that it's nothing to worry about.

Does anyone else have experience of this, please? Also, there's supposedly a link between Autism and Nystagmus. Does anyone else have Nystagmus? There doesn't seem to be much information out there.

I know for a fact I am NOT NT. if I am NT, please explain why a trainee psychologist told me I have Autism, (she hasn't assessed me) why I have an email from a friend who says "I can't say I'm surprised you've been diagnosed with Autism. I have known you for 9 years and it's always been obvious". In fact, it's because of something else he said and that a stranger said to me, why I even bothered trying to get a diagnosis.

Where have people said I don't have it?

You don't know me or my situation.

If you're in the UK, you'd normally see your GP, who will then refer to you a psychiatrist However, if you see a psychiatrist due to mental health issues, you may not need to see your GP.

I am at this stage now. They will need to speak to your parents too.

Is it essential to the process is it that they need to speak to your parents? What if you don't want them involved or they themselves refuse? Also what if the parents version of the truth is not entirely accurate or deliberately misleading in order to thwart diagnosis?

As far as I'm aware, yes it is essential. When my psychiatrist asked me why I didn't bring my parents with me, I don't think he was that happy. At the time, I hadn't talked to my parents, mum was working and dad was recovering from an operation and couldn't walk properly.

Oh bloody hell. What part of "I was screened" do you not understand? I haven't been assessed properly.

I have spoken to a friend who is a GP. (and on the spectrum) He said "I would sidestep the issue of 'getting a diagnosis' by requesting for your statutory right, as enshrined in law by the Autism Act 2009, for an assessment of autism. They will then say either a) ok, we'll refer you, b) no, we won't refer you (contact NAS for legal advice and solicitors at dawn) or c) you have been assessed and the outcome is..."

sorry, you have been assessed, the psychiatrist asked where you parents were, and you have written that you lost the report.

Oh bloody hell David.

I didn't lose my notes - they did. I have been told by the psychiatrist that I was screened. Unless you know of any full Autism assessment which takes 1 hour split into 2 sessions? I was told by Southampton that their assessments take a full day (6-8 hours) and a lady I've been in contact with, says hers take 1.5 - 2 days.

The CLASS clinic in Cambridge takes 3 hours. You have to fill out two questionnaires at home, a parent has to do one then they assess the results, only then are you then invited for a full assessment which last 3 hours.

On the NAS website are addresses of clinics in South west England for ADults, your GP has to refer you. Best you get referred to the CLASS clinic then. they are the best.

O have been told by a friend who is a GP that The Autism Act 2009 says I have a right to an assessment.

Yes, that was mentioned here earlier. Just get them to refer you to ARC Cambridge, the CLASS clinic is run by Prof Simon Baron-Cohen. It's the best.
