I'm kind of in the same boat here. When I was a kid, I had nightmares at least a few times a week, and every time, they were so realistic, I never knew if it was a dream or for real. Needless to say, I hated bedtime with a passion. The vivid nightmares disappeared around age 12, but still resurface from time to time. Now, however, I learned to recognize when something is a dream, by looking for telltale signs. For instance, if I'm walking on a grim-looking street and I see a person hanging from a lamppost, I immediately recognize that I'm dreaming. After all, the odds of something like this happening in real life (at least where I live) are virtually nonexistent. At that point, I usually wake up, turn on the lights, and say to myself: "that wasn't real; just my brain f*cking with me". As a result, I almost always go back to sleep, barely remembering the nightmare in the morning.
