I was thinking more about why there are...14 votes for an offline phyisical community, 6 votes for the festivals, and the commentary is on the resturant.

Setting up "big-ticket" item is hard, particularly for those who have suffered from social exclusion, or do not have social capital for whatever reason. It's also upsetting to see the amount of negative feelings caused by that social exclusion, look at the "Do Aspies normally suck at everything" thread that is currently trending. And that's one that is'nt even a trolling thread!

As I've said before, we need cultural artifacts. We also need social capital, where a first step would be in forming offline Aspie social groups. I realize that for many of our members, particularly those in high transportation-cost areas, that would be difficult. For those of us in areas where it is possible, I think that is something that we really should do, for our own benefit, if no one else's.

Here in Northern Ireland, we have an autistic chocolate factory.

You can order their bars online and they are delicious. I would urge everyone to buy some.

well I know one thing-there are some pretty sharp aspies out there and if they put their mind to a problem that might occur in setting up an aspie based country-a aspie restaurant or for that manner-a manufacturing plant for ice cream-any problems that might rear their ugly heads will be solved and quickly-many aspies love a challenge and the wrst thing sometimes to say to an aspie is "I don't think you are going to be able to solve that problem"-got said to me once by my boss and a day later the problem he had was solved.

I'm sure there is a great deal of creative potential in any community, and I'm sure there are some "sharp Aspies". As I've tried to say before, I prefer to avoid discussions of a "country", because that means, among other things, different things to different people.

I've also noticed more interest in the offline festivals/social groups. Other than Autreat, and Alex's proposed event, are there any other models that we could borrow from?

Putting together a small festival would'nt be that difficult, it looks like the hard part is picking a location that works for the membership, selecting a date and time, and making the required arrangements. The next hardest part is making sure that the organizers are compensated for any monies paid to reserve a site, transporation arrangements, etc. From some limited information I've obtained, most ASD-related events have to be promoted in the usual e-mail/social media circles, and there is always a question of the number of people who would visit.

In short, one would need an expected attendance number (say...20), to select a location, which would then determine how much the price is. The more people who can commit in advance, the lower the price for each individual person. I think that offline events will grow naturally from Aspie offline social groups, but if anyone has any ideas that would make it easier, I'm all for it.

Agent P, I thought of you when I saw this, the proposal is to build a 14 unit complex if I recall in London, Ontario, Canada. Some neighbours are not to thrilled although city council appears to be on the right side. Hope the link works were you are.

Rapidroy, thank you for the link. Video does'nt work, but the text portion does.

I am curious at the price of $3 Million CAD for 14 units? Is this a case of higher land prices in the area, or are there other pieces to this project? I don't have any idea what the local real estate market is like.

That's the second article I've seen about that housing proposal. The first one I came across was this one:

http://www.lfpress.com/2013/04/15/neighbours-object-to-the-design-location

I tried to find more information about the project by googling it, but nothing came up.

I don't really undestand what the big deal is for people in that neighbourhood....I can't figure out from the articles whether or not residents are opposed to the project because it's designed for autistic people or because it's an apartment complex.

Here are two more articles about the London, ON apartment complex proposal that talks more about the reasons people are against it (I'll stop posting these links now, I promise):

http://www.londoncommunitynews.com/news-story/2535996-housing-project-for-autistic-adults-referred-back-to-staff/

http://www.lfpress.com/2013/04/16/autistic-home-sent-back-for-review

Seems like it's mostly about the fact that it's an apartment building....I really hope that, whatever happens with this proposal, that apartment complex eventually gets built somewhere.

Perhaps someone with more technical knowage can repost the video, it works here(I'm about an hour away from London). Basicly a 50-60ish year old woman liveing next door is fearing the complex will create a busy, noisy neibougherhood that will prevent her from doing her gardining. She must not know much about people with ASDs if she thinks were party people. The lot appears to be a former service lane of sorts that some have been using as extended backyards, sorry just becouse you had free range over the land over the years never ment you owned it.

I hope so as well. I would be curious to see if any sensory-related items were put in/excluded from the design, but at least some of the above sources suggests there is no final plan. If someone gets ahold of a final design/rending/copy, please PM me a copy?
