I voted for above average , but I`m not sure :P.
The things that are for that is that I started too hear 12th tone music and such with 11 and that the first thing I heard was Yes and Hendrix (6 years old) , and music that was never under this level, and I play the trumpet just 6 months but I play easily between c2 and a2 but that could be because I`m obsessively training my chops
But it could be too that I`m just a smart ass with a good ear...

GEE For SOME reason there are a lot of boys that LOVE drums, but there HAVE been a number of women drummers over the years. You'd think they would be fine with you playing.

You have to remember I was a kid in the 70's before women were considered equal enough to do the same thing as guys. There were a number of female drummers in the school band by high school, but my mom still thought it was too masculine. My dad always objected to my playing the bass and wanting to play drums because they were not solo instruments. If Dolly Parton hadn't been playing guitar I'm sure I wouldn't have been allowed to play it. Mom is really into me learning fiddle because she considers it very feminine, despite the vast majority of accomplished fiddlers and violinists are all male. Now consider what I just told you about mom and then get this she played tuba in high school now how is that feminine?!

I just feel silly buying a drum as an adult with no aspirations of joining a band or else I would just go get one. I love the looks of Pork Pie drums.

it makes me think about the fact i never dared to touch any instrument and not learn any music because it was too sensitive (compared to painting which i've always done but it is not as close to my heart), maybe music is a thing that comes closest to any definition of love i could imagine, so i only hoped it would reveal itself one day ...
till finally i got too old to worry about it and i started to learn it anyway, and judging by the fact i never study anything at all but succeed quite well (with an already overbooked life) i really think it's stupid i haven't done it before...(and i'm ready to kill anyone who now wants to separate me from music)

I've been thinking about learning to play the theremin. Anyone here have any knowledge or experience with one? I just wanted an idea of how hard it might be.

s1lenze, check Wikipedia, they have quite an insightful article regarding the Theremin. They say it's notorious for being easy to play, but very difficult to master. I have an MP3 of someone playing "Somewhere Over The Rainbow" on it, and it makes me laugh every time I listen to it ! !!

The theremin is a joy to play. Regrettably I no longer have access to one, but once you're confident with it, you almost feel the shape of the note under your hand.
You're going to need a knack for visualisation and a good body memory to get past the weird-B-movie-sound-effects level.
The ondes martinot might be easier to try at first, as it has frets.

First time I have ever heard of a Theremin. Looks like it could be an Aspie instrument. Really intriquing. I want to hear some music now.

What other obscure instruments are there? What to hear about them all!
