had insane eating disorders all my life up until i saw a specialist about it in my late teens. Will always be something that operates in the background from now on and I need to keep my weight and health in check to be able to keep those demons at bay, which I am doing.

I'm naturally thin (horray, you've most probably met the first thin woman to actually admit she's thin!! !)

But sometimes I still like to watch what I eat. Yes I do like my food, but even though I'm thin the same rules still apply. I can't just take being thin for granted and start eating everything I want. There is such a thing as ''becoming fat''.

It's only when someone calls me "fat" is when I become conscious of my weight.

My weight fluctuates between about 160lbs - 175lbs, depending on what I've been eating and how active I've been.

I'd actually like to work out and gain some muscle mass, which would make me weigh more, but I really have no idea how to go about doing that, especially since I find it difficult to find motivation for physical activity that accomplishes nothing except the activity itself.
I need to have a reason to be lifting stuff, or walking, or running, or whatever, other than the activity in and of itself.

Like, I'll walk to the store or the bank or whatever, but I won't just go for a walk just to walk.
Similarly, I'll lift heavy stuff if I'm moving, if I'm asked to by a friend, or if I'm beng paid to, but I won't just lift heavy things for the sake of lifting heavy things.

Ah well.

Of course I am. I am a young, overweight American woman.

I am not conscious of my weight.

I know I am too fat, but I don't know my weight--nor do I care. I will be happier when
I have lost some of this fat, but I will know what is comfortable without weighing myself. The key issues are geometry, ease of motion and social prejudice. It would be best to avoid the negative judgment if possible.

long, long hours at a computer and a sub-optimal diet don't help.

serious question - why do you think America has a problem with it's weight? America's weight is a bit of a fascination for the media here in the UK (not that we are great in this regard) but i am always baffled at how a country can suddenly start getting overweight. Just interested to know what you think kick started this and how it could be fixed?

I was actually referring to the massive discrepancy between media depictions of attractive bodies, and the average body, when I mentioned my nationality.

I do have an opinion on the question you asked, but I don't wish to derail the thread.

I don't care too much about what I weigh. Being a mesomorph and having a lot of muscle mass, without trying, I'm generally much heavier than I look or what my clothing size would suggest. I wear size 10 jeans, 6 in the US, so that's pretty ideal (or so we're told). But, I weigh about 160lbs putting my BMI in the overweight range (I'm not fat, just muscular in a feminine way). So, weight isn't a good indicator of anything really, well not for me. But, I do care about how I look and I also care if my clothes start to feel a bit tight. I basically don't like spilling over the top of my jeans, as that's undignified. :)

Nope. I weigh myself quite a few times every day but just for asperger's sake. I do nothing to manipulate my weight...I just like observing weight fluctuations throughout the day
Currently I'm 54.4 kg/170cm

Not anymore. There's not very much I can do about my weight anyway, so why worry?
