NO. Autism is made up of many possible symptoms, some of which may be severe while others are not, and others are completely absent. Severe autism does not necessarily involve severe sensory issues.

If you do use them, do you have handler near by to keep you in control and safe?

What does this mean?

Someone with you at all times in public, makes sure you are safe and others are safe from you.

What does that have to do with wearing ear defenders?

Someone who wears ear defenders is probably more likely to be low functioning.

I wouldn't necessarily assume that...many people on different areas of the autism spectrum wear ear defenders for various reasons.

If I'm going somewhere I know is loud, I wear earplugs (movie, place where they will be playing live music, some restaurants, etc.). I also keep a pair in my mom's car in case I forget mine or somewhere is unexpectedly loud.

I would if I lived in a busier city and had to take things like public transit a lot. For me I take them along to things like concerts in case the sound is too harsh on me. Normal foam or reusable silicone ear plugs are discrete and if you grow the sides of your hair are practically unnoticeable, that's my tip grow your hair out.
