When you're still young, yes looks will matter more. Am I going to date someone I find hideous, heck no. Now this may change when i'm like 10 years older and i'm still single, i'll be like I will just take anyone.
Some truth in the notion that older people have different priorities.
But you seem to be expecting that as you get older, if you're not already married off by then, you'll become desperate and so will be forced to lower your standards. I think it's less depressing to see it as learning to adapt your standards to something more relevent to a real-life relationship.
Having said that, I never felt looks to be all that important, even when I was a teenager, as most girls were visually attractive enough to interest me. I became more and more picky about personality traits once I realised that most women weren't right for me in that regard.
