I hacked the system and made answers key.

Apparently I am more stupid than I thought. LOL
Out of 24 questions I got only 11 right. I made some stupid mistakes. :ninja:

I would like to hear explanations for:
2.5, 3.4, 3.5, 3.6(why not B?), 4.2, 4.3 and 6.3(why not F?).

I'll post what I think as to why, but I may not be looking at it right.

2.5 - I have no idea. I got this one wrong and I still can't figure it out. But I don't want to use a calculator or pen & paper, that's cheating IMO.

3.4 - the second picture hits all the places where the lines intersect with the circle in the first picture. If you were to draw lines connecting every place where the parallel lines touch the circle, you would have drawn the shape in the second picture. Although, in my unprofessional opinion, answers A,D,G would all do the same thing; because the parallel lines make a square, it could 'start' from any point. If there is a reason why A is more right than D or G, I don't see it.

3.5 - the square dots in the first picture highlight points where lines in both the first and second picture cross. If you were to overlay the second and first pictures, the dots would mark where the lines intersect.

3.6 - in the first picture, we have three shapes with five sides each and in the second picture we have five shapes with three sides each. The missing picture should be one that has eight shapes with two sides each (although the correct answer really just has one side). The placement of the shapes shows the shape of the next picture (the five-sided shapes are in a triangle, the shapes in the next picture are triangles). B is wrong because the shapes in the first picture don't make a square and/or there are not four of them (squares have four sides).

4.2 - the numbers are split; 53 is really 5 and 3. The right side (3) increases to 7, a difference of 4. Then the left side also increases by 4 from 5 to 9 to make 97. The right side increases by four again from 7 to 11, so the left side must do the same, increasing from 9 to 13. So the right answer is 1311, which is really 13 and 11.

4.3 - I have no idea. see 2.5

(I still don't get 5.4, BTW, even after reading 30400v's explanation, which was very good. I'm just dumbing-out on that one.)

6.3 - the line segment can be joined with the shapes-in-the-form-of-a-shape to make the shape of the shapes. That's confusing; in the first part, there is a line and some triangles ordered into a shape. You can put the line segment on top of the triangles to form a large triangle. In the second picture, the shapes are squares, so the line segment must combine with the squares to make a large square. I got that one wrong at first, I thought it was F also, so I can see why you think that. You did identify one way in which answer F is similar to the example in the same way that the two pictures are similar to each other, but it was not the similarity the test was looking for. IMO, it's not wrong, just not right.

Can someone tell me WTF is up with 6.1? I can't figure out any reason why these are similar. Also, 2.4, 2.5, 4.3.

For 4.3
For each sequence, you take each number and add it to the next, then multiply it.
1 3 2 1 is the start
next number is 4 3 5 6 3 2 which is 1+3,1*3,3+2,3*2,2+1,2*1

The next number starts as 4+3, (7) 4*3 (12), 3+5 (8), 3*5 (15) and so forth.
so to get the solution, just start on the last number string till none of the other answers remain.
7+1 (8), 7*1 (7) 1+2 (3) 1*2 (2) giving 8732 for a start, which leaves only answer g

For 6.1
there are four sets of shapes. within each set, the difference between the two is the addition of four vertical blocks.
the left most two block shape is missing it's partner, which is D, because D is the same as that two block shape with the addition of the four vertical blocks.
The two L shaped shapes match each other, as the only difference is the addition of four vertical blocks in the larger of the two.
I hope that makes sense.

I have no idea on 2.4 or 2.5, I guessed on those as well.

The reasoning is good, but you maybe missed one minor detail: the "shapes" on either side of the ":" match the "pattern" on the other side....At least that was my eventual conclusion when I did it. (And I hope that made sense.)

And that's as far as I feel happy to go with hints, just in case someone accidentally pops into the thread prior to attempting the test. For the same reason, I'm not intending asking for information regarding the questions I beleieve I got wrong.

edit: I'm happy to explain my reasoning via pm if anyone is stuck on a question(and it's not one of the ones I got wrong).

I see it now. The squares are points where you are supposed to draw a line 90* from the part of curve the square covers. The lines make the answer.

I see.
I interpreted it as the second picture shows the shape of figures created by figures being the smaller part of the complex shape in first picture (first shape is square + triangle, second shape is hex like figure + square). I missed the amount of sides clue.

Ahh. I know why I got it wrong. I could never comprehend the whole "number of tens" and "number of units" idea. For me 53 is 53 (53 of something), eventually "50+3" or "5*10+3",never "5 tens + 3 units".
The reading of years in English has always been very confusing to me because of that issue. For example 1988 as nineteen eighty-eight... I see it clearly as a thousand nine hundreds eighty eight years and I cannot comprehend it can be read as 19 centuries and 88 years. I see numbers as whole amounts, 19|88 is clearly not the same amount as 1988! Something is stuck in my mind about that.

But I understand the example now, as you pointed out that I shouldn't see the numbers as whole numbers here.

I got different explanation, maybe easier to imagine.
Triangle means a figure containing 2x6 block+2x5 block attached to it vertically in a way which makes the 2x3 part of the 2x5 vertical block hanging on the side of the 2x6 block.
If the triangle is pointed right the 2x5 block is over the 2x6 block and the 2x3 part is on right.
If the triangle is reversed the figure is also reversed and 2x5 block is under the 2x6 - the 2x6 block covers it partially so only 2x3 part of the 2x5 block is visible. The 2x3 part must be on left because the figure is reversed.
We can make a line where the 2x3 part ends.
To check if it is good we check if the figures over circles also make sense. One circle has a point on it which suggest it must be reversed. And it is. The figure over normal circle is 2x6 block with a 2x2 block attached on right and the reversed circle is 2x6 block+2x2 figure attached on left. Nothing covers the 2x6 block here because the glue is on side, not front or back this time.

Each of the first 4 figure is supposed to have a matching figure with 4 squares added on top. Only first one doesn't. So you add the 4 squares on top of it and get the answer.

2.5- I guessed, but I think my answer was right? B? I can't find an answer key.

I noticed that the difference between 12 and -4 is 16, and 7 and -1 is 8. I guessed that those number probably related to each other in the same way as the other three and the unknown. The difference between 12.5 and 8.25 is 4.25. The difference between 23 and the mystery number must be 8.5, so the answer is 14.5, or B.

I posted the answer key a few posts ago. You need to cover the empty area in "Quote" as if you wanted to copy it to see it because the text is intentionally the background color.

This was one of the ones I got wrong, but looking at the explanation, I'd suggest it isn't where the lines cross so much as the first point of intersection for the lines. Otherwise there would be 2 more squares towards the "top" and "bottom" of the curved line where it would need to re-cross the lines to head back towards the centre.

I could be wrong, of course...I was when I tried to work it out initially, after all :)

I worked it out as the first set is:
left hand side: shape "a" making a pattern "b"
right hand side: shape "b" making a pattern "a"
where "a" and "b" are the same, and the "pattern" is basically marking the corners (or ends of line segments) of the shape it represents.

This one had me stuck for a little while.

I worked it out by noticing that each of the shapes had a vertical "box" above them, so that was probably not the "important part". I also noticed that the 2 identical triangles had an identical "horizontal" section above them before the next "shape".
That left 2 different circles and 1 triangle. I worked on the theory that as you can't show a reversed circle easily, the "." probably meant it was a reversal of the normal circle. as the triangles had a 3 "square" wide horizontal section, and the circle a 2, then the 5 "square" horizontal block needed to be split to give the 3 or 2 long section to the respective shape.

I can see how the "sign post" representation works, and I think that I was taking that into account subconsciously, as I remember thinking something along the lines of that with regards to the extra vertical line above the "reversed" triangle (horizontal "block" in front of\behind vertical one).

Thanks for the explanation, as this is one I got wrong.

Just to simplify your formula, though: Using compass points for the outer numbers and "c" for the centre, it would appear that:
c=((|W-E| + |N-S|)/2)^2
or simply, "c" is the square of the average differences between opposing sides (actually, it obviously wasn't that simple, considering I got it wrong :) )

The way I worked that one out was to divide the circle into quarters ((-4,-1)(23,12.5)(12,7)(?,8.25)). If we refer to these as (a,b), in the first 3 "sets", a=(2xb)-2. This leads to
?=(2x8.25)-2
=16.5-2
=14.5
