Yeah, I saw that before anyone replied. It asked for place, time and date of birth. Like, exactly. I thought nobody would respond but so many did, think it either got 2 or 3 pages. Don't know if there was any plans behind it or not but it just seemed incredibly sketchy. Even if the person doing it wasn't, anyone could have read it because it wasn't even in a member only forum. And we don't know if all the members are safe either.

In the unlikely event that someone took the time and trouble to track me down using stuff that I've posted on WP, and then turned up at my door, they'd realise immediately that I'm a complete ****hole and would go away and leave me in peace.

Yep.

This is what always gets me about alot of people on the internet (not necessarily here): They'll go and talk about how scary the Net is and how careful you have to be and how you should never give out info ever and.... then they go and use Facebook. Which typically involves full, real names, connections to family members and friends, photos of themselves and others, and more... and more... and more... "But it's Facebook, so it's okay!"

*sigh*

At least facebook has privacy settings. If you search up my full name on facebook my profile won't come up. I have all my privacy settings as high as they go. I barely log in to it, let alone post anything. The only people who can try to send me friend requests are friends of friends. But on WP people who aren't even logged in can go to anyone's profiles and search through all their posts, other than the ones in the member only subforums. Members can do anything. WP doesn't have the privacy settings of any of the other sites I use which contain any of my personal information and that does worry me slightly.

I sometimes google people  it's a habit of mine, because I love information. I never do anything with it... but there are websites where if you know someone's user name or full name, these sites will give you all their other info, full name, facebook profile, all sorts of things. Profileengine seems to think I'm highly influential... I doubt that a lot. Spokeo is probably the worst.

If people know my real name, they'll find there are actually a lot of different people with my name, and I really hope that if they want to stalk me, they don't mix me up with someone else... that would be embarrassing.

It's a shame they don't delete posts though. There's even a sticky that gets you to answer questions about yourself. I'm really so afraid of putting so much information here that it's possible for someone who knows me to recognise it's me and read through my posts. Constantly on my mind. I don't know if I'm being excessively paranoid or if it's a genuine thing to be concerned about. I don't think I've put enough to be tracked the other way - for someone to use the information here to track it back to me. I hope not. But it is always on my mind. I read WP a lot but slowed down posting because of this.

I guess at 65, I simply don't care anymore about other people's opinions of my autism...

This is why anonymity exists. And the choice of anonymity too.

I never posted my true full name or my true location in real life in the internet. Hell, I never had an online banking account or sort.

I could always tell people in the internet that I'm a female aspie with unaligned agnostic belief, but would that be matter? Because I'm not the only person who could be a female aspie with unaligned agnostic belief.
I could always tell that I'm hungry and I like fries, but am'I not the only one who would thought of that?

I could always tell the truth or lie all the things I said within this post and all things I ever typed. And surely I'm not the only one who would do the same either.

How to avoid getting into trouble in the internet to begin with? Cut the juice.

Good idea. I might start telling lies as well as truths.

If one lies here, it kind of defeats the purpose of this web site. That's why we have user names...

I can get the concern and others who might be unaware should definitely be given the warning but for me, I don't care. I already joined sites that require me to give too much of myself (Facebook, for example) and even without the probable diagnosis on its way, my co-morbid conditions and circumstances mean I simply will never be able to work. The best I can do in life is to release TTRPG games and if somebody climbs in my window they'll get punched in the face and fall several floors to their liable death.

Perfectly fine to give a cautionary mention, however I despise being told what I can and cannot share when it pertains only to me. I'm no contact with family and my carer knows how open I am online. Only I am in danger. If people wanted to find me all they would have to do is become friends with one of my Facebook friends (yes, giving them ideas, I know).

So I'd say to others that as long as you fully know all the consequences - usually teen sites talking about Internet safety will cover the vast majority - and you take into account those around you, share what you like while remembering it could be used against you in the future.
