ret*d is just a word that means someone is not as developed as normal. if people want to be a**holes and use that as a way to insult people then those people are at fault, not the word.

I once incurred quite a hospital bill for my mother when I tore this kid's ligaments because he followed me around calling me "ret*d."

Not everyone is capable of that. Personally, I have no control over whether or not I react emotionally to something. It boggles my mind to think anyone could control that sort of thing.

If I get called by a hurtful name, it cuts me down emotionally. Either I openly take offense, or I quietly suffer. There is no other option.

Nobody is capable of controlling whether or not we feel offended by something. What we can control is how we react to it. We control what we do or say when it happens. Personally I usually don't let it show when somebody hurts my feelings, unless it's a close relationship and I want them to know so they can fix it and never do it again. I usually insult them right back and stand up for myself. While it's difficult to learn and was one of the hardest things I ever had to learn, I believe it's doable.

I think a good comeback to when somebody calls someone ret*d is "ret*d? Really? If thats the worst you can come up with to insult me, I don't think *I'm* the ret*d one here." Yes, you are using it too, but you are using it right back at them. That's a nice, mild insult and I would think it wouldn't make most people uncomfortable or scared to use it in the situations where somebody calls them that. After you say it though, you walk away. SHake your head and make a pooh poohing motion with your hand at them if they try and insult you again.

Some people like me don't care if called names by words like ret*d or anything else, they're just sounds to me.
