Only for stuffed animals and only for a little while when I was a child. It was after reading "The Velveteen Rabbit". Do NOT read that story. It will make this problem much worse.

When I was 23 a car did a u-turn, drove into the side of me on my Triumph 500 motorcycle.
Bike carried on sliding up the road, in gear, throttle open.
I could hear the poor bike in distress, with the engine revving higher and higher, I knew I had to be quick, I got up from the road onto my feet, that's when I noticed one of them hanging off, just swaying a few inches above the ankle.but that wasn't going to stop me, my bike was in distress and I was going to save it.
So I got down on my side, and dragged myself, near severed leg dragging along behind me, maybe 100 yards, until I reached that bike and could turn it off.
No human has ever been as loyal to me as my bikes and I will be loyal back to them.

Hello Babybird, hope you are well, I have been away wasting time on dating sites thinking I really should make an effort otherwise I will always be alone.
At least my lack of success means I wont be kicking myself by deluding myself I could have gotten somebody if I had tried.

I'm glad so many of you can relate!

I anthropomorphise my electronics too, and give some of them names.

I'd expect it's quite normal to have feelings for stuffed animals. I feel most sorry for inanimate objects that don't get a lot of love. I feel especially sad for products in a store that are of poor quality or have bad reviews, because I know that most people won't want to buy them.

^I remember reading that as a child. Just thinking about it makes me want to cry.

I do, mainly with my stuffed animals and my electronics and games. I feel bad putting away a stuffed animal sometimes cause I feel like they're neglected, and with my video game consoles I feel the same way if I haven't played them in a long time. Like they actually feel lonely and unloved. :P

I tried once or twice to read it to my own children but stopped when I realized I'd not be able to finish it without crying. That book is why I've kept my Bear safe for decades. She's Real.

I feel sorry when I throw old shoes away. Even if they smell now, they are still comfortable and they have always been there for me.
Like that episode of "Doug".

My synthesizers, I would not turn them off because they seemed to loose their spirit. Especially the older ones. If I left them on, they would be more playful and show me special things. They would dance with me and our relationship would get better the longer that the power was not broken.

Bugs, yes. I can not kill a bug without sadly whispering, "Whelp, that's the way I'd want to go." If I make a mistake and have to hit it twice I feel like crying for the second or two that it had to suffer.

I talk to the dishes, "You go here and you, you sit over there. This will be your place lil' cup."

I hear trucks as being grumpy or once I heard a truck chuckle. I said to my friend, "That chuckling truck sounds so happy." I got that weird look. I'm not crazy, I know they are not alive but the world gets better when we love.

I agree. I believe that objects deserve respect, too.

Besides, how can we know for sure that inanimate things don't have some sort of a conciousness?

RIP hitchBot

The thing with objects, people put time and effort into them; you can't take away those things, nor can you put a price on it.

It's why I hate the insurance generation; it's only a thing that can be replaced! Yeah, but you can't replace the memories and life you've put into it.

Even if they aren't "alive", they still have our lives in them.

Corpses are things, yet we have laws against the desecration of them.

When I was a child, I found it horrific to throw away chicken bones after dinner. I wanted to give them a burial in the backyard. If a chicken dies to feed me, shouldn't I at least honor what remains?

You'd think that if our food were really still living they would be glad to *not* be eaten.
People have told me however, that I would often talk about my stuffed animals as if they were living things, like when I thought I should give them away because I didn't role-play with them as much, and that they should be owned a kid would would really enjoy them, especially if they can't afford to have many good toys. But if I did I'd often end up missing them and realize I'd never see them again.

Darn you, Toy Story! Darn you to heck!

I also have a problem with my video games. I've sold or given away games after beating them and then regretting it, even though I probably won't replay it unless it's to see the different endings. It's as if the characters in the games I've grown attached to are gone from my life and having other things like plushies or pictures or even a video of the gameplay just reminds me of that. I especially wish I hadn't sold my first Pikmin game, even though I beat it and got to see all the endings. :(

Okay, so today I thought I'd pay attention to whether I do some of these things, have done them forever, and no longer even notice. Of course I do. Best one was when I was looking at a cookie sheet of breaded eggplant, thinking to myself, "no one is going to take those two because they didn't turn out pretty" and then feeling really bad for them.

They were delicious, by the way.

I feel far more emphatic towards inanimate objects that I do towards people.
