I always ran up and down the stairs. I used to stay home from school and do it. My dad would stop by to check on me, or catch me at home if it was a school day, and I would be running up and down the stairs. He thought it was weird but he didn't know I had autism. Does anyone think that self-stimulatory behaviors are harmful? I don't want to change this pacing that I do. I don't have stairs now but I still pace in circles and run suddenly when I am excited.

I stack things. I can be in the most irritable mood but if I start stacking blocks, coins or canned food I'll calm down. Or I play with a slinky.

My 11 year old AS son does something very similar, and it's definitely a reset. When he's done with one project, and getting ready to do another (especially a creative project), he does this thing where he leaps all around the room and up the stairs. It's kind of a leap-turn thing, because we don't have much floor space. Sometimes he leaps up onto the stairs and back down, or onto the couch.

It's something he has to do, and when he's finished, I know he'll be ready for his next project/activity, or he'll be ready for a snack.

I kinda do something similar whenever I'm stressed or overexcited. It involves rubbing my hands up and down against the top and back of my head and sometimes my face and legs, but I'm not too sure whether it could be considered stimming as it's a purely automatic response and it doesn't seem to be some sort of comforting mechanism as such, just an outlet for strong emotions.

When I get excited I have to be really active. I don't think it's stimming more my inner ADHD child is trying to escape.

Reset button topic

In my younger years I would jump up and down, flap my hands. Later I would run up and down stairs to release the endorphins--which may be what happens when one stims and the reason for stimming or changing stims.

Now I just rub my palms on my thighs or flick my fingers on the sides of my legs.

Very thought provoking thread.

My preferred method of 'reset' stimming is, and has always been, spinning in circles. 9 times out of 10, it works after about ten minutes or so.
