I never suspected him as AS, merely a little bit eccentric like many thespians.

Either way he's definitely one of a few truly great actors around.

And of course, if anyone famous does visit WP, seeing their name here as part of AS outing is the surest way of making sure they never come back....

Unless lots of others join in and claim to be that celebrity also, like "I AM SPARTACUS", "no, I AM SPARTACUS"...

Yeah, it gets annoying. Somebody highly creative was an introvert in their youth, and suddenly they must be have Aspergers.

I think a lot of people with AS have an AS radar. ASdar lol It's not just a matter of being an introvert and creative that make him appear as possibly having AS... it's the flat effect, it's the long gazes, the zoning out, the odd social behavior, his particular odd interests... etc. And yes, I do think he is an awesome person!

I think it'sperfectly understandable to hope for someone admirable and accomplished to have asperger's. If I can't identify with people generally, and the only people I can identify with lead lives with the same awkwardness as myself, of course it would be inspirational to be able to say "but aha, this amazing individual has my own traits and I can identify with him and thereby feel better about myself"

I admit that I always enjoy hearing that people I admire have experienced alienation just like me. It makes me feel less alone, and in good company..

I do remember when I saw " The elephant man" I related to Hopkin's character of Dr Freddy Treves .

Freddy seemed to be a fellow who was desperatly trying to the right thing, but not sure of how to do it and whetther he was succeeding. In one scene he says to his wife that he feels he is not so different from the film's villain and asks" Am I a good man or a bad man?"

He also had rages at injustice, while normally quiet and mild mannered.
Mind you that was a character Hopkins was playing, but he just seemed to play it so well.

I got into acting in highschool, and it was very, very helpful for my social skills. The practice of taking the characters' words and action in the script, then building a model of that person in my head so I could understand why the person was doign them, helped me develop the skill with real people, too.

I did a lot of theater and dancing in high school... mostly musical theater. I have issues with spoken word as I tend to get monotone, but singing is something else entirely... I've always loved it. Also, being part of the musical/theater community helped me gain some really good friends that I still am close to now.

By the way, Dan Aykroyd and Stephen Speilberg both have been diagnosed with Apserger Syndrome.

I wasn't a bad actor, but I no good off-stage. Some on WP have talked about different types of AS; I think there are some of us who are more inclined to acting or public speaking. As for speculating on who has AS, please consider that many doctors will spot a person on the Spectrum at glance--and back up that hunch with testing I hope. Maybe we,Spectrum and AS people, are so used to seeing people who are not like us, that it's easy to spot a cousin. I've heard the term "gaydar" for people who can spot nonhetero folks. Could we have aspdar? Or do we just like people and wish they're like ourselves? I don't see anyone out to claim criminals and thugs as our own.

Apparently he is an aspie. Well spotted OP. "Well, I’ve been diagnosed with Asperger’s, but I’m high end. A lot of people with Asperger’s are highly functional, but inconsistent. They have nervous ticks, nervous habits, inconsistently obsessive thinking. Some neurological people don’t agree, but my wife was trying to figure out who she was married to and she read a newsletter from a psychotherapist. He said, 'You should see some of my patients.' He put it back on the map that Asperger’s people tend to be creative or severely handicapped. I don’t know if that’s true of me, but I know I can never be restful. I tend to multi-task. I decide I’m not going to paint and then I’ll spend 24 hours painting" http://www.desertsun.com/story/life/ent ... /96018744/

Agreed, no diagnosing, no speculating! =)

Even if he was lonely in childhood, doesn't mean he was AS. Do we know why he was lonely? Maybe he lived in an out-of-the-way place in Wales. Not everyone fits in everywhere.

Someone else posted an interview with him in another thread and he says he was diagnosed as AS, so let's not ignore someone else's diagnosis just because they're famous and we don't like them.

This is a necrobumped thread from 2009. The article where he said he was diagnosed was published last week.

Yeah, I didn't check the date of the OP before I posted. Sorry.
