A nice hot cup of coffee or hot choclate goes a long way before bed time, and so does a hot bath. :)

I have the exact same problem. I can lay there for hours before being able to get to sleep, but generally I get so bored of TRYING to sleep that I just give up and go do something else.

I don't know why but I sleep better in the day that at night. I usually go to sleep at 3am - 4 am and get up at 12:00 PM. I tried to adjust the timing by going to sleep early but I can't sleep, 2 days ago I was tired and was able to sleep at 11:00PM but then I woke up at 2:00 AM and tried to get back to sleep again and I couldn't until about 6:00AM I was able to sleep again when it was daylight.

That happens to me, the problem is when I have to go to college, classes begin at 9:00 AM for me, frequently I'm late because I need more rest time.

I haven't drunk coffee or other products with caffeine for more than 6 months, and things haven't changed.

I have the same problem too. I have a horrible time falling asleep, though usually stay asleep once I'm out. I also have a horrible time waking up-which leads to the ridiculous situation that I'm usually more tired when I wake up than when I go to sleep.

The two books I've read dealing with AS both mention difficulty falling asleep as being common. I wonder why that is? Does the amygdale have something to do with controlling sleep?

I honestly think I've gotten stupider over the years from killing brain cells from lack of sleep. I quite frequently only get 4-6 hours a night during the week. The only "strategy" for me is to just stay up until I get so tired I pass out right away. Otherwise I've spent HOURS just sitting there.

My brain won't "shut off" unless I'm super tired.

I used to have terrible trouble but since my underactive thyroid issue, I get very tired, so not usually a problem unless the mattress is digging into me...I cannot sleep with light or noise either.

I have an underactive thyroid (ie hypothyroidism), though I don't know if it affects my sleep one way or the other (I'm on synthroid). I can't sleep with noise-especially non-constant noises like talking or music or the clicking of a hard drive in a Tivo.

I think this is one area that needs more research concerning sleep difficulties and AS.It is pretty common that many of us are "night people".I would love to see a sleep study dont)like they do for sleep apnea)to see if our sleep and dream cycles are different then NT....it would be most effective if done over a several day/night period VS...going in at 10pm and wiring the person up until 7am,which is what they do for sleep apnea.

I remember having problems sleeping since I was in grade school.Often sneaking out of bed to watch the late, late movies(yeah,Vincent Price)or reading under the covers.Lack of sleep may be some of the cognitive problems AS kids have since they are forced to live by a day schedule without adequate sleep.I have had to live some of my adult life in a day schedule and eventually get used to sleeping at night for a few nights but always fall back into a 4am sleep-12pm wake-up schedule on the weekends(and always tired at work in days.)

I have worked overnights for the past 13 or so years and find it a good "nitch" for AS(avoid people, employers really need people for these shifts and put up with my "differences")but as I have gotten older, even this schedule...I am often tired and feel "jetlagged".

I get off work at 10am but still takes me several hours to fall asleep and I need coffee to wake up...I hit my peak around 11pm but get tired around 3-4am and then wake up fully at 6am and then cant sleep again for another 6 hours...so,it seems that there is a cycle of sleep/wake that is not suited for 8 or 12 hour work shifts....wish I could work independently when I am functioning at my highest.

Two problems getting to sleep...restless legs(much leg stimming before sleep)need to change positions every few minutes...turning like a chicken on the spit.......need to pee(even when I dont,no,it's not an infection)itchy,itchy,itchy...a bath before bed seems to help but I need to go to an alergist, soon.I used to have problems with "worry thinking" but the Bynadryl and 75mg Effexor is helping slow down the cirular thinking.

I'd like to see a sleep study like that too. There's got to be something interesting here if so many of us do this. Who here DOESN'T?

That 4am-12pm thing you mention is interesting. That seems to be what my body gravitates towards too. It's also seemed like the day should be longer than it is for how my body works (sometimes making me think I'm supposed to be on a different planet with a longer day).

Melatonin. 1 mg. Less is more. I take the 1 mg, it works for me. My AS son takes half a 1mg, works for him. Its best to take it then dim all lights, turn down noise and relax til it kicks in. It doesn't work all the time, maybe 5 out of 7 nights. I have had severe insomnia my whole life and started melatonin 3 months ago and am finally a normal sleeper.

Melatonin is also a strong antioxidant that is good for your brain. Cheap and easy to get too. I get 90 ct bottles at walgreens for $3.99, I wait til they have their buy one get one free sale on vitamins.

Sounds interesting. I'm always scared to take stuff like that that's not regulated though.

I ahve been considering taking this9it's a hormone not a vitamin,I think)but I did read something once, sorry I cant find a link....that it might be bad for people with depression,so I avoided it.Now that my depression doesnt seem to bad,I am reconsidering it.

I didn't know they made 200 mcg Melatonin. I take the 1 mg kind. I first tried the 3 mg kind, but I'd wind up very sluggish the next morning, like walking dead. I switched to the 1 mg dosage and it works just fine for me.

I could be wrong. I know the melatonin in your head is a hormone but my Doc gave me the impression that the suppliment was an antioxidant that some how boosted the natural melatonin levels in your brain. Once again, I could be wrong. I still love it and won't stop taking it :D ]

Oh god do I have sleep problems. I can't get to sleep and when I do I wake up again a few hours later. Phenergan helps but I've heard it's not good for you. But sometimes it's either that or be a zombie.

I am able to sleep on school nights from 9:30PM-3:30AM but on nights when I know I don't have school the following day, I stay up attending to my interests.
