I can appreciate that. You just want people to see asd is a serious impairment. I agree. Too many people joke on it. Imagine if everyone was seeking diabetes diagnoses.

Yeah, that would be super weird. "Hey everybody, look at me, I'm so cool because I wear a blood glucose meter and prick my finger every few hours. Also, I'm going to be super picky about what I eat and expect everyone to remember all my self-imposed dietary restrictions, because I've decided I have diabetes. Doctor? No, I haven't been to a doctor, why would I need to do that? If I say I have diabetes, then clearly I do!" Some people are just weird!

I can't imagine wearing a shirt saying I am aspie or whatever because I would find it humiliating. I don't see anyone wearing a shirt saying they are diabetic or my dad wearing it or wearing a shirt saying "I have ADHD" or my mom wearing "I have cancer and will probably die in the next twenty years and I live with chronic pain" or my youngest brother wearing "I have ADD, Seasonal Effective Disorder, and depression and I work full time and go to school and I am raising two children" and even I haven't seen parents having their kids wear a shirt advertising their disability.

So, wait. What?!? Is this topic actually advocating that autists aren't amazing? Should I burn my WrongPlanet.net T-shirt? Should WrongPlanet.net be renamed WeArentWorthy.com? Should I be ashamed that I don't play the victim?

It's the Aspie crowd that would be more prone to treating it like a social club. Those with more severe autism find little if any fun in advertising their condition.

It should be renamed fakingit.getoverit.com because all Aspies are in to be cool and all self diagnosed people are in it to excuse bad behavoir.(sarcasm)

Not all. I was not able to afford the thousands of dollars for an adult diagnosis since it was not covered under my insurance so for a while I had to advocate for myself without one. But finally I found a situation where the diagnosis was able to be paid for so I was very fortunate to be able to get one. But had I not had that situation, I would still not have an official dx. I would have been just as Autistic as I am now and have always been since I was born but without the money to cover the diagnosis I might have never been able to get one. I do believe that many self dxers really are Autistic and just lack the means to find out. I don't believe every single one of them is and I know that there are posers out there. But I would never say that all self dxers are in the category of posers. I know I wasn't.

As I read more responses I am wondering if you were being sarcastic Spinelli. If you were, then ignore my response above. Sorry, Maybe I need to wear an Aspie thsirt, "I'm and Aspie and don't always understand sarcasm!" :D (That was sarcasm! :D )

The trouble is: most people I know don't refer to the New York Times Best Seller List, and don't even read the Times (it's $2.50 weekdays and Saturdays, $5.00 Sundays).

They get their autism information through media like People Magazine--or perhaps even the National Enquirer.

I've never heard anybody use the term Aspie---ever. I've heard people use autism--but they don't mean people with Asperger's. They tend to call Aspergian-type people nerds, dweebs, etc. To these people, people like Adam Lanza, who isolate themselves from the world, then kill people, have a obscure condition known as Asperger's Syndrome.

That's true. People read the low end reads. That's the last place one should look for medical and mental facts.
