Thanks for the Busker info...never heard that term, though I have put my dollars in their guitar cases.(we just call the them "homeless" in MN... )

Yeah it sucks..the stigma attached to street busking. Not all buskers are drunk homeless spangers...
People really liked my act. I was a hit with kids dogs and people and i put alot of effort into what I did...and i wasn't homeless.
i also sold sock monkeys on the street....just one or two nice handmade creatures at a time..

Unfortunately it is harder for me to find "normal" jobs than it is for alot of people because i do seem kinda weird..to the average "Hiring Manager"...and most places where I work when I do have a normal job do sorta have to (ahem)have patience and work with me...and my differences.....
so the entire time I was in New Orleans it was the only way I made my living..even though I did actively seek employment elsewhere.

Busking did lead to my eventually getting ticketed and the ticket did lead to a warrant and the warrant did make my staying in New Orleans more difficult..but things were going downhill anyway...but um..yep....I like busking..would like to do it again someday.

I was a university researcher which gave me a lot of freedom (once the general research program was established) to set and fulfill my own goals. I loved it and was very productive. Most universities seem either to be full of eccentric personalities, or tolerant of differences. However, I moved university and country to somewhere where I was bullied half to death, and have found it hard to get back. This last university was generally intolerant of difference (racist, sexist, homophobic, nationalist) and treated any comment or discussion as "disloyalty" and "criticism" - I imagine that is hard for many people, but I could not self-censor my ideas on managing failure or improving productivity, and this department was an unproductive failure that could have been excellent.

I have done some freelance consultancy that has been very enjoyable - people with no idea how to solve a problem (or who have been to various experts without any results) just left me their data and paid me for coming up with an answer worth money to them. I love the challenge and the reward of seeing meaning come out of chaos.

I would like to create a genuinely entrepreneurial business and could do the ideas, the planning, the market assessment and so on, but I can't do the communication and management. I could talk the hind legs off a donkey on how it works, and spend nights perfecting it, but I could not follow up leads, network with the market or handle the priorities well.

I have my own business which is helpful as I think I am more or less unemployable and really wouldn't enjoy the economic restrictions of living on 'benefits'
