Aspie7120, I like your positive attitude. That you are proud of your AS and have made great progress socializing and having fun too is right on! Enjoy.
I am not proud nor ashamed of AS, but I am proud to have come this far considering the impact it has had on my life. It's a struggle. Everyday. Though I didn't know about AS until a few years ago, the impact has been constant. Yet there were years when I was socially engaged, moderately accepted, and passed as 'near normal' - meaning people didn't see me as particularly odd. All the time though, I struggled a great deal on my own to maintain my social roles, amazed why I was having SO MUCH DIFFICULTY. Sensory overload is one of my issues. I set out to be independent. That meant marshalling my energy to be able to work, with little left over for socializing.
For me, the degree to which AS was debilitating varied a lot over the years. With little stress and a small group of friends for support, I did well. With high stress and almost no friends, I had a rough time coping. Depression floored me too. Now in my fifties, I'm physically more affected but mentally more adjusted to the reality.
So I'm doing OK. Life changes for everybody.
