It only takes a small number of people 'spamming' their depression and negativity all over the most popular sub-fora -- and derailing unrelated threads, as well -- to bring down the overall mood of this or any website.
ideas are contagious! I think it would be good to have a space to discuss mental health related stuff. I think the haven is good for that? this place is great for solidarity but also seeking professional help is important.
The Haven is essentially THE sub-forum for discussing mental health issues
without fear of being blamed and shamed. It would also be nice if those seeking help would not have a verbal melt-down at the mere
suggestion that at least
some of their issues are self-generated, and that
maybe those issues would be resolved if they tried -- I mean,
sincerely tried -- a little self-improvement instead.
That is not to say that a lot of people do not have really serious issues that require professional intervention to resolve (if they even
can be resolved), but that it still requires the person with the issues to reach out to a professional for help on their own.
In my honest opinion, the "Bipolar, Tourettes, Schizophrenia, and other Psychological Conditions" sub-forum is useful only for
informational discussions of these conditions, as it does not carry the same "Thou Shalt Not Hassle" impetus of The Haven.
