Nic, it sounds like you already know you have ASP. You don’t need someone to “diagnose” you with what you already know about yourself. I agree, though, that you should get a second opinion because I know that many of my ADHD and ASP friends are fascinated by fantasy books and games. I feel bad for you that you would get misdiagnosed because of your interests.

Yes, it's for us to know ourselves and assert ourselves. That said, for me a diagnosis is helpful b/c I have difficulties with lifelong invalidation. Interestingly nobody at my ASD support groups or here have invalidated me... yet. Given the ASD stereotype remains: male, "cold", externalizing --- and I am none of those, I am still on the side of cultural invalidation. The diagnosis is a mental "leg up".

@Nic, I like to imagine that you set in motion something for that evaluator (or her sphere) that will help other ASD folks be correctly assessed. Enough invalidation for us already!!

I have found a more respectable autism and related disorders center at a local university hospital. There they specialize in autism and developmental disorders and it shows. On their website they are thorough and their paperwork is much more specific to autism and less on mental disorders and personality disorders.

I think you are on the right track. In my experience child/adolescent psychologists are better at diagnosing autism even in adults.

Nic, it sounds like you ran into a prejudiced individual. Do you suppose you would have gotten an SPD diagnosis if you went in wearing a t-shirt and jeans with a lot of crosses and talking about your personal relationship with Jesus?

I know lots of mystical people who are not SPD, and many who are otherwise textbook-normal (whatever that is :) ).

Let us know how things go with the new place.
