Recently, like since the late '90s? IRC based chatrooms were common back then, that's when that definition became the primary one.
What's IRC?
I have never been on a "chat" with more than two people, but I'm sure that the tech support folk are multi-tasking.
I don't put up with people talking over each other, or conversation in a noisy place. If it gets hard to follow, I shrug, point to my ears, and leave.
IRC (internet relay chat) is a standard developed for chat. It's mostly obsolete now but it was ubiquitous at one time.
It allows for both rooms and one on one conversations.

From the description, I see that I have one friend who used that, but I was never invited, and because of the confusion over the need for a microphone, I never gave it a second thought.
One reason I could never participate on Facebook is the lack of gradations between "Stranger" and "Friend." If they'd had a "slight acquaintance" description, that would have matched the usual situation.
I don't recall ever using it with a mic, but other types of chat allow for that option.
I've never used Facebook, but I can see what you're saying.

Internet relay chat has various options I believe it chat just be as simple as writing back and forth to one another with options of various other people joining in . Chatting back and forth line by typed line. Or. Microphone ina option as well , but that uses up much bandwidth on the chat app you re using . You can segregate chat into various rooms
(Threads) as defined by the title of the room , with options for the user to display all the optional rooms to join in that specific chat . PMs. Are optional on those sites aswell . It was , is a step up from the forums. And threads type of issues , in that , your responses to statement appear almost immediately on the thread and chatters can reply almost in real times. Back and forth . Owner of the relay chat can and do moderate the thread also in real time.
Personally the Forums here are a bit more civilized way of postings. Versus chatting. Imho .

Loves velcro,
Yes and no in my case. I think I have been doing it on a site, but it only works for me because there are very few people on it at once and we are all on the spectrum.
When there are more people on I can't do it. I doubt I could do it at all with NTs.
The advantage of online as apposed to IRL is not having to do things that you don't want to. I may get stuck in a conversation with four or five people that I can't avoid in real life but online I can ease my way out.
So maybe I could do it, but I don't want to.
