Emotional Regulation through music
If I'm already emotional or distraught, which I am most of the time, music is overwhelming and I can't listen to it, even happy, fun music. Especially if it's something I really like and feel connected to. (If it's music or a song I don't particularly like, then I can be indifferent to it and it doesn't affect me.) It's just way too much feeling and it knocks me down. Even when music comes on at the end of a show I'm watching, I usually mute it.
When my boyfriend died in 2015 I didn't listen to music for two years, because every time I would just cry and feel overwhelmed.
