...cure autism now is speaking of selective abortion?? WHAT??

Are these the same people I see while flipping channels that are musicians that want to cure autism or is this something different? Now I have to do research and possibly vomit.

"Bush Signs Combating Autism Act!

President Bush has signed the landmark Combating Autism Act of 2006 (S. 843). The bill--which has the support of all major autism advocacy groups--authorizes nearly $1 billion over the next five years to combat autism through research, screening, early detection and early intervention. The new legislation will increase federal spending on autism by at least 50 percent. It includes provisions relating to the diagnosis and treatment of persons with Autism Spectrum Disorders, and expands and intensifies biomedical research on autism, including an essential focus on possible environmental causes.

The bill was sponsored by Senators Rick Santorum (R-PA) and Christopher Dodd (D-CT). The House version was brought to the House floor by Congressman Joe Barton (R-TX), Chair of the House Committee on Energy and Commerce. A companion bill was originally introduced in the House of Representatives by Congresswomen Mary Bono (R-CA) and Diana DeGette (D-CO)."

First of all, the autism that these group are identifying with are the people who are very low functioning to the point where they have to be dependent on some sort of medical attention for the rest of their lives.

The problem is they wont stop with just low functioning.. they will want to "cure" (aka eradicate) all autism if given the chance.

Why can't they just accept us instead? Wouldn't that be a cure?

And your basing your assumptions that its a disorder on the opinions of professionals. If a professional says its true it must be true because they are a professional.. logic failure.

I have yet to see any empirical evidence that shows that autism is a malfunction.. a harmful mutation and nothing more.

Look at the various medical journals out there! Their opinions are based on observation, and you are free to look at their results. Don't give me that crap.

And please don't pass your paranoia off as morally concerned, how is it moral to deny people with autism proper treatment especially since these people, more particularly those at the lower end of the spectrum, need it.

I've given you some links, read them!

But you have yet to show that the people who consider autism a disorder (e.g. doctors, psychologists, etc) are wrong. So far, all evidence is against you.

Check the opinions of Tony Attwood or Simon Baron-Cohen. Their opinions easily trump those of the Neo-Freudian quacks who dominate the psychiatric profession.

I never said they should be denied treatment only that they should be allowed to exist and be "cured" according to their own desires not the wishes of others.

I agree with you. Also, when it comes to drugs like ritalin handed out to children, it's not as beneficial to the children as it is the parents because long term uses of the drug has serious side effects. Short term solution to long term problem. What is the cure for autism anyway? do they mean the usual handing out of drugs and that form of treatment or a real cure?

This is based on a few misconceptions:

First, Freud's theories is not accepted by any psychiatric or psychological practice.

Second, Tony Attwood does not support your position at all. Just read his books more carefully, since they are about how to deal and allieviate some of the symptoms.

Third, Simon-Baron Cohen proposes that Aspergers Syndrome, not the necessarily the whole ASD spectrum, is an extreme of the male brain. But this does not mean that it is necessarily a good thing, or a normal thing.

Well, first of all, ritalin is very help if applied properly. The issue with ritalin revolves mostly around the ADD/ADHD controversies (in that they are using an arbitrary definition of such in order to be able to boost sales). So the issue here is not quite the same. And yes, there are people who do overuse drugs, but that is a different matter.

And there is no cure for autism, just treatments of various sorts, ranging from Applied Behavior Analysis to drugs. They are not intended as a cure as far as I'm know...

And people can be more than one race.. or at least can fall in between genetically.

What I dont understand is that you just get through saying that genetically there are three races of people (either, either, or) but if someone suggests a second set of genetic race determinates to further subcatagorize you immediately dismiss it.

Is race determined by genetics or not? Caucasian (NT/ASD), Mongoloid (NT/ASD), and Negro (NT/ASD) making the total 6.

All of them are genetically unique so whats the problem?

Geez, then why not consider gender a race? That's genetically determined too!

Neither one. I've seen enough extreme viewpoints on both sides. I've had enough of the "I'm better than you" mentality on both sides.

I dont think waging war against NTs would be worth it, nor would it be rational.. Not to say that certain wars shouldnt happen however.

What viewpoint! The only thing I've seen from here is a bunch of baseless assumptions  .

As far as I know, this sort of thing exists only on this website.
