Edit: Actually, I just looked up the DSM-IV criteria, and I didn't notice any intelligence qualification. Am I missing something?

It's in there under the heading Diagnostic Features:

Quote:
Individuals with Asperger's Disorder do not have clinically significant delays in cognitive development or in age-appropriate self-help skills, adaptive behavior (other than in social interaction), and curiosity about the environment in childhood (Criterion E).

They lump those with mental retardation in with autistic disorder; 75% of those with AD have a subpar IQ as a child (it can improve).

Gotcha, thanks, Daniel. So that just means that Aspies have to be above an IQ of 70, then.

Of course, we all know how rotten IQ tests tend to be when it comes to measuring the IQs of ASDers, but oh well. They don't give accurate combined IQ scores for people with LDs either, because of the huge gap in ability. For instance, my verbal comprehension index is 39 points higher than my perceptual organizational index, so my combined score is basically useless.

I tend to get anywhere from 120-150 points on those tests. They mostly say that my pattern thinking ability is strongest.

My verbal score is 147 and my perceptual one is 108. Can we see a problem with giving me a combined score? That is why IQ tests suck. They tend to over-simplify things, not to mention only test certain skills. My brother, who is dyslexic, tends to do poorly on IQ tests because even though he is incredibly bright and has a great vocabulary, he's not too hot at the things they test.

Yes, I think that is well said. I've been bullied by NTs, and then there is the simple fact that I have difficulty understanding them and vice versa, so I prefer to find friendships in other aspies (or odd NTs, as the case usually is).

I have been bullied a lot... But maybe the reason that most of that has been at the hands of NT's, is not just because they are more likely to be bullies, but also because there's just more of them!

I've also had more NT people be kind to me than Aspies, but that's only because I've met more NT's than Aspies. Most of the time, any experience (good or bad) we've had interacting with people has been with NT's because they are the people who were around.

If you had green skin and grew up in a country of blue skinned people, and you got bullied, would you hate that other race? What if the only people who were around to come to your assistance and stand up for you, were also blue skinned? How could you hate the blue skins then?

I know there are differences between AS and NT people, otherwise we wouldn't be here talking. And yes, bullying is part of that "socialising behaviour" that we're told we often lack. But how much of the bullying and nastiness is a part of being an NT and how much of it is just a fact that if someone was going to bully you, it was most likely going to be an NT because they are the most common people around.

I mean, most of my friends are NT's... There just aren't enough Aspies around to make up the numbers.

---

I think that a lot of the NT bashing on this site is just a way to let off steam and poke fun at the majority. It's like when black comedians make fun of the way "white folks" do things. The way female comics make fun of men. It's a way to equalise the minority to the majority, or those with the advantage to those without. And if your part of whatever group that's ahead of the game and you have a sense of humour, you can laugh at yourself.

I mean, I'm an Aspie, but I'm also a white male in a western society. Part of a minority in one aspect but part of the majority (in the power/political sense) in two other aspects. I think jokes about "lame-white-guys" can be really funny. I don't think NT's should be threatened because we make calls like "NT's are so weird, they talk about Paris Hilton like she's a real person!" or "NT's are all 12 o'clock flashers! Every display on every appliance in their house is always just flashing 12:00"

It's a generalisation and it's inaccurate much of the time, but it's not really hurting them. They are the big guys, the top dogs right now. The price you pay for having more of life handed to you, is that you have to put up with a bit of ribbing every now and then.

It's not like the NT's are suddenly going to crumble into a heap, just because a couple of Aspies call them "dumb" - most NT's probably don't even know what Aspies are, let alone that we're talking about them.
