Why is WP going head to head with Autism Speaks? Let them do what they want to do and WP can do what it ought to be doing: providing an open forum for people whose lives are touched by autism to talk to one another. Engaging in the sort of advocacy that Autism Speaks performs is expensive. It costs money to get onto talk shows, big media interviews and so on, but what benefits are there to the members of WP if WP should be showered with that kind of attention? For a young autistic man Alex, you have already been given the spot light by no less than the New York Times for your work with WP, is there a need for more?

Aside from the web hosting charges, there should not be that much more in expenses. If Tony Attwood is willing to contribute then so much the better. But why should he be paid to share his "wisdom" with us? It is not as if he or anyone else has a definitive understanding of what autism is.

WP needs to make clear if it is a community, an advocacy or a publication. Aside from having very different costs structures, the very spirit of each effort is simply not the same nor do they mix well. I joined a community to share and learn. An attempt at global advocacy would be over reaching and I can tell you that worldwide, autism does not lack vocal and wealthy advocates. And as a publication, what do the administrators of this forum propose to say about autism that is more compelling than what the people who struggle with this condition have to say?

If this is to be a community, then it is NOT a business. Advertising with occassional contributions from members ought to defray all the costs of running a message board. And the system works because we are all putting in time to make this a vibrant place; though special mention has to be given to the people who keep it up and running.

Have a clear view of what the mission is. Otherwise, if you attempt to monetize this goose, you might end up slaying the gander because it would not lay any eggs.

FWIW, my office at work:

(I'll replace that crude printout with an official WP mini poster presently; it is just temporary.)

<Icarus raises his hand...> I haven't been a member of a team for years; if somone sets up a WP group I will join (and I will look for one just as soon as the servers start responding, for they seem not to be just now.)

Good fortune,

Knock yourself out. No hairbrush, but you can use the hat to cover the mess that not owning one will leave.

I'm not quite ready to announce my neurodiversity to the entire world, but I did order the clock yesterday.

Not sure why, but there seem to be two different versions of the store:

Wrong Planet and Wrong Planet 2; the former has many more offererings.

Good fortune,

- Icarus slips on the slippy slide..

Thanks for posting that. I actually found a sweat shirt on the "other" store I would wear (the "something wrong with the universe" one).
