Fair enough.
This thread is an attack on Autism Speaks, not the idiot curebies who we've met in the forums.

In that spirit, 'Autism Speaks - quick, flame them!'

Try this one on for size:

There is no such thing as curebies. There are only responsible parents who know what's best for brain damaged children. When those brain damaged kids recover from autism, none of them ask to revert to being autistic.
Having a brain that works right is better than having a defective brain. You all should try it. You'll be much better off.

I don't even know what Autism Speaks is.

To me, there's a difference between 'damaged' and 'slightly faulty'.

Obviously, you aren't among those or you wouldn't be turning to quackery.



I think there are some that would say different, if they were still alive. I feel sorry for your son for having a father who can not really love and accept him, who refuses to give him what he really needs to develop to his full potential and instead experiments on him with his dangerous and ineffective 'cures'.



Your brain is hardly an example of a high functioning, non-defective brain. The naive idea that a specific brain development could be 'reversed' by removing toxins could only come from a defective or sick mind. I prefer to keep my own brain.

First and foremost, autism is not "brain damage". As a person with AS, I can tell you that my brain is most certainly not damaged, as I have an I.Q. in the genius region (as did Mozart at about 250, J.S. Bach, Beethoven, Glenn Gould at about 800, and several others). Secondly, autism is not something from which one can "recover", nor is it an extricable part of someone's mind. There is no non-autistic Adam in this consciousness; my whole consciousness is autistic. Making me neurotypical actually means changing the entirety of who I am, putting a new person in my body.

To address possible rebuttals you might have:
AS is autism. Don't fool yourself into thinking that I am not autistic because I am high-functioning.

I see from previous posts that you have an autistic son. I am telling you as someone who grew up autistic in a neurotypical family, trying to make him neurotypical will only result in psychological damage. Every autistic behaviour he demonstrates is a coping mechanism, so by telling him to act neurotypical (not permitting any stimming, forcing eye contact, etc.), you are depriving an oversensitive mind of much needed coping mechanism. You have great power here: you can raise a capable, happy son who can work with his autism to yield excellent results or you can take a child and torment him by trying to change him into the neurotypical child he can never be.

Lastly, some of the language you used in this post could be construed as being offensive enough to be in violation of the posting rules. I encourage you to proceed with caution in your future posts.

I agree that some of the forumers are reasonable, but I think this is more about the actual organisation. Have a look at the "Autism Everyday" video they put out - I'm pretty sure that you can find it on the site, otherwise it's on youtube somewhere.

Basically, the only images of autistic people they show are of children throwing tantrums, followed by parents complaining about their lives. One of these parents even talks about how she wanted to drive herself and her autistic child over a cliff, and the only thing stopping her is the fact she had a "normal" child waiting for her at home - and to top it all off, she said this right in front of her autistic child.

The parents on the site are often just struggling with a difficult situation, but the people that run the organisation are a very sinister group that run a deliberate negative publicity campaign against autistic people.

Oh pah! Aspies don't have defective brains - just brains that are differently wired than other people's.
Autism is for life - it is an inborn condition. Autistic people can do great things and overcome great odds, but at the end of the day, they are still autistic.

Autism is nearly always genetic and hereditary.

Could you be any more insulting? Why not just call us ret*ds and have done with it?

Speaking for myself, WP is my haven from a lifetime of insults such as 'brain-damaged loser' and I do not appreciate reading your choice of words here.

You should try learning some tolerance and acceptance, and we'd all be better off.
