My mum has told me that I did not start talking (as in understandable, meaningful words) until my 4th birthday. Apparently talking this late is very unusual. From what I know most people seem to start talking between 1 and 2.
Is delayed speech common to AS?
Technically, according to the DSM and ICD, there shouldn't be a language delay with Aspergers. If there is, it should be diagnosed as Autistic Disorder.
However, in the US, auties with language delay will more likely get an AS diagnosis if the diagnosis is given later in life and it is impossible to verify the speech delay if it's just the client giving the information as opposed to a parent or older sibling confirming it. Unless the person had speech therapy, which is a little more reliable.
In the UK and in mainland Europe though, diagnosticians are a little more prone to diagnose AS even with a confirmed speech delay, especially with the greater influence of Gillberg and Szatmari who both include speech delay in their AS criteria. So in Europe there is a greater divide and some do not follow the ICD stipulation of no language delay as strictly.
