I started out being a loudmouth, but after a while my self-confidence was so dead after pretty much learning that every time I opened my mouth I made a fool out of myself, but I'm kinda coming back to speaking what's on my mind.

I usually don't ever say what I'm thinking, but when I think out loud, it's mostly not directed at anybody. Sometimes.

The way I see it, thoughts are private.

Does that make any sense? :?
That does make sense, but what I'm referring to in this thread is refraining from striking up a conversation with someone or responding to a statement they make.

Well then, yes. Most of the time I do keep my mouth shut and my thoughts to myself. I've come to value the privacy of my thoughts, sometimes I get the feeling that it's the only thing that's truly private in today's world...but that's me going off on a tangent again.

I know better than to say what's on my mind most of the time; it's usually not nice. As far as a "normal" conversation, I can only respond well if I know the person I'm speaking with well. It takes me a long time to be able to really just talk to someone.

This is not the case with me, as I have a strong aversion to conflict and disagreement. Whenever I think about saying something, I analyze several factors and usually I determine that the possibility of starting an argument is too great and I'd probably be better off not saying it. I also have slow communication skills, which means if someone questions the idea I am trying to convey, I have a hard time answering those questions sometimes.

What do you guys think? Do any of you do the same thing?

I'll read the rest of the thread in a bit, but yes absolutely. I hold many things within because the outcome just wouldn't be reasonable: Do I want to fight? What point would that cause? Do I really want to argue? What would I gain? Do I really need to explain myself? Wouldn't it be easier to just end it like this?

And yes, the second part as well I can relate. I cannot debate with a person "live" and need time to think everything out before I say them. I must look up sources to better understand my answer and that is something you cannot do "live".

Yes, yes, yes, yes, yes. This is exactly what goes through my own head.

But I try to not talk at all around family because I always make them mad for some reason when I do speak.
